What’s happening to New York City’s record stores? Before the internet made it easier to get any vinyl record in the world you wanted instantly with a click of the button, there was a different process. In New York City, places like A1 Records, Academy Records, The Sound Library, Turntable Lab, Rock and Soul, Tropicalia In Furs, or Big City, among many others, were staffed with knowledgeable record heads who helped you along with your vinyl quest. While shopping and digging through dollar bins, you often ran into other DJs, collectors and music lovers. Frequent said store enough, and you became part of the store’s community.

Can Classical Music Cue a Vinyl Revival? Digital Quality a Concern Amid Devotees: Founder of classical reissue label Electric Recording Co., Pete Hutchison is no stranger to the affront of contemporary digital releases. He started the LP-only imprint to make vinyl editions of important classical works available to the public. Speaking to The Guardian, Hutchison highlighted the deception of digital versus analog recordings, citing the Compact Disc’s dishonest introduction: “[It’s] the great con. They said that CDs were indestructible, but they weren’t. They said it would sound better, but with the MP3 we are at probably the lowest point in the history of sound. It’s a compressed file. If you try to play an orchestra over a proper sound system on MP3, it’s just garbage.


Record store fights to keep 15-year-old deaf cat after customer complaint: A Tauranga store owner defending his resident cat has been inundated with support after a complaint was made to authorities in an effort to shut the shop down. Vinyl Destination specialises in records, comics, toys – and coffee. It is also home to Callaway the cat, who is as much a part of the store as the cash register. Owner Luke Wormald said the 15-year-old deaf cat was a much loved part of the store and even had his own Facebook page.

BBH London help Tesco bring back vinyl to the masses: Quick to respond to the vinyl record trend, Tesco trialled the sale of vinyl albums in select stores over the Christmas period, and after a hugely positive response, they are now planning to stock vinyl records in over 40 of their major stores. To promote this renewed pledge to bring vinyl back to the supermarkets, BBH London has launched a new print campaign, which uses famous album iconography alongside Tesco products to announce the return of vinyl to Tesco stores.

Fleetwood Mac Reissuing 1982 Album “Mirage” as Deluxe Box Set: Mirage originally hit stores in June of ’82 and went on to top the Billboard 200 for five consecutive weeks. The album yielded three top-40 hits, “Hold Me,” “Gypsy” and “Love in Store,” which peaked at #4, #12 and #22, respectively, on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The deluxe edition of Mirage features a remastered version of the original album; a CD of outtakes, rarities and alternate takes; a CD of live performances recorded in Los Angeles during Fleetwood Mac’s 1982 tour; a remastered vinyl edition of the record; and a DVD-Audio disc that includes 5.1 surround sound and high-fidelity stereo mixes of Mirage.

Riding record resurgence: “Vinyl is making a resurgence,” said Joe Thompson. He and his wife, Paula, are the new owners of Underground. “Growth in record sales has increased 20 to 30 per cent in the past two years. Baby boomers who grew up with records are going back to them, and young people are buying them too because they want something tactile and they like the warmth and depth of the sound.” Record sales aren’t going to outstrip the massive digital download industry any time soon. But, record stores can build themselves a nice specialty niche.
