Records come round again: Sony to open vinyl factory in Japan, Major label’s Japanese arm to build new vinyl-pressing plant to keep up with growing demand for reissues and new releases on retro format: It has been dismissed as the niche domain of hipsters who don’t even have turntables and nostalgic dads buying countless reissues of Dark Side Of the Moon. But the resurrection of vinyl has been given major label backing, with the announcement by Sony Music that it will restart the manufacture of its own records. The Japanese arm of Sony Music announced it would open its own record-pressing plant in March next year to cope with the huge demand for vinyl in the country. Sony Music Japan shut down its in-house vinyl pressing production in 1989 after the advent of CDs, which entered the market in 1982 and were dominantfor the next two decades.

Vinyl Records Make A Comeback, Stay Tuned! Vinyl records undoubtedly possess their own charm. They command the listener to engage completely and dismiss the new age idea of “shuffle”. Vinyl enthusiasts swear by the sonic quality offered by vinyl records and leave no space for modern mastering. After its almost thirty year hiatus from the music scene, and the takeover of CD’s, online streaming and gadgets, vinyl may be making a comeback.Over the last few years the demand for vinyl music has increased and to meet this demand Sony will resume production of vinyl records from March 2019. The production will take place in Tokyo but the genres of music that will be produced are still undetermined.

The world’s best record shops #072: Carrillo Musical, Caracas: One of the few paces to get records in the Venezuelan capital, 80 year old Néstor Carrillo’s Carrillo Musical also happens to be one of the oldest in the country. “I have been in this business for more than 50 years,” he said. “I have music from classical to Miriam Makeba, Carmen Delia Dipiní or the first Los Panchos albums”. This eclecticism also sets Carrillo apart, as most retailers in the city don’t carry many, if any, imports. Photos of Mexican actor Pedro Infante with covers of Venezuelan singer Alfredo Sadel adorn the walls of the shop, which is both charmingly chaotic and meticulously organised after Carrillo’s own decades-old system.

The Doors to Get the Singles A’s and B’s Side Treatment: Over the last couple of years, it has become popular to take the music of 60’s and 70’s bands and release new hit packages that contain both the A and B side of those singles. On September 15, Rhino will jump on that trend with the release of The Doors: The Singles…Look for The Doors: The Singles in a two-CD set, 2-CDs with the first time ever release of The Best of the Doors on Blu-Ray, and via digital retailers. There will also be a special vinyl box set with all twenty U.S. singles on twenty 7-inch 45’s with original cover art in a flip top box.
