The Lineup: The Sultana, Minivan Blues Band, Bob Dylan w/ Leon Russell

I like to juxtapose things that are polar opposites, because it amuses me. Like pulling up next to really fancy cars in my piece-of-crap Honda and revving the engine. Or being really loud in a waiting room full of silence. Or sneaking up to one of the many beautiful women I creep out in bars on a weekly basis by standing next to them and saying nothing.

Scratch that last part. Anyway, that’s my theme this week. Something old, and something new(ish) in a similar vein.

The Lineup: Huey Lewis & The News, Flesh Parade with Cremains

…And that right there is not a juxtaposition of names you’re likely to see too often. This weekend, follow me on a journey of extremes, from laid back, classic pop and soul music that you love to badass, grinding, too-loud-for-your-mom metal. Here we go!

But how they were. And the best part – the part that made that record sound the way it does – is how laid back they were.

The Lineup: Nobunny, Ted Nugent

This weekend brings about a couple of shows in Memphis that are sure to be very, very different, but which also have one thing in common: Meat. Yes, this is a weekend of meat. Let me explain.

Friday, July 15th: Nobunny at Hi Tone Cafe with Sharp Balloons and Kruxe

Nobunny is the alias of garage/punk/power/bubbly love pop musician Justin Champlin. It’s a weird (read: awesome) show. You can expect a bunny mask, and some disrobing, or weird outfits, loads of sweaty hipsters, possibly women’s underwear covering up what it wasn’t meant to, etc etc. Sometimes Champlin wears outfits made of trash, and he’s even been seen wearing one made of… you guessed it… meat. Go early and catch the new wave stylings of local openers Kruxe, and dance your head off on what should be a fun Friday night!
