TVD Recommends: Kevin Hearn at Schubas Tavern, 1/24

If you have the misfortune of being unfamiliar with Canadian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn, then do your self a favor, and keep reading, because you’re not going to want to miss this.

Most known for his work with the Barenaked Ladies, Hearn has played with the Rheostatics, toured with Lou Reed, fronted Kevin Hearn & Thin Buckle, and most recently released his second solo album, Cloud Maintenance. A follow-up to Mothball Mint (1997), Cloud Maintenance brings us the sort of light indie-pop that Hearn has perfected.

Unfortunately for fans across the country, it looks like Hearn has only one upcoming show scheduled. Fortunately for Chicago, it just so happens to be at Schubas Tavern. Like I said, you’re not going to want to miss this show.

Released December 20 on Celery Music/Dangerbird Records, Cloud Maintenance boasts an impressive guest list of vocalists and musicians. Hearn has mastered the ability to handle topics like heartache and loneliness with a dream-like whimsy, which add layers of depth to the already fantastic album.

“The record’s got the cloudy days and the sunny days. So I wanted to have songs that were cheery or reflective, childlike and daydream-like. I was attracted to the idea of sparse arrangements and little stories. I’ve always been a fan of harmonies and vocals so I kind of went to town with them on this record.” —Kevin Hearn

You can pick up a vinyl copy of Cloud Maintenance online or in person at Schubas on Tuesday.

The 21+ show this Tuesday (1/24) kicks off at 8:00 PM at Schubas Tavern (3159 N Southport). Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Save yourself the $2 to put towards a beer by grabbing your tickets online.
