First Date

ANR Plays U Street Music Hall tomorrow night, 8/25.

“Thanks to the Fisher Price model plastic record player, which I’m sure some are familiar with, having a much enjoyed personal experience with great big, hand held music was an easy thing to develop a while back.

Do they still make that kind of thing for kids? Let’s hope so. Here are just a few of the records that have meant a great deal to the both of us, and have definitely encouraged a consistent love of good, old fashioned vinyl.

Disney’s The Chilling Thrilling Sounds Of The Haunted HouseI’ve had this one since I was a little kid. This, and the ride it soundtracks, blew my mind when I was in kindergarten and got me into the exciting and frightening things in life. This record has a particular relationship to the band, as we’ve sampled it countless times for various projects.

Also, this could easily be a field recording of what Brian’s old haunted home town in Rhode Island sounds like at night.

Black Dice – Miles Of Smiles | This was one of the records that was on a lot when we were making our first records. It was the one “experimental” record that our Rush-obsessed room-mate could get down with. Throughout their growing discography, this band has always done a great job of fusing ambient, old industrial, and progressive electronic music with the right amount of hooks and infectious grooves to invite new fans who might not otherwise enjoy those genres.

They’ve always sonically been a great source of inspiration, starting right here with “Miles of Smiles.”

Prince – Around The World In A Day | Some records are worth it just for one side, and this is one of them. Side B is pretty weak, save for “Poplife,” but Side A of this record is an insanely executed, eclectic mish-mash, that manages to sound like Prince the entire time.

One song that really stands out on this is “Condition Of The Heart,” a super-melodramatic piano ballad with some great synth orchestrations further in. We’ve probably covered most of this album live throughout the years.
