TVD Ticket Giveaway: My Morning Jacket w/ Neko Case at MPP, 8/12

The best rock ‘n’ roll is the musical incarnation of a huge melting pot: elements of blues, country, soul, funk, gospel, folk and whatever else is lying around, thrown together and stirred around into a potent stew. The music of My Morning Jacket is one of the tastiest dishes you can find, every spoonful delicious in a different way.

MMJ’s bass covers the full spectrum from groovy and elastic to ominous and rumbling; guitars play fiery blues licks, gentle acoustic patterns, or churning climbing runs with equal verve; there are horns, strings, organs—you name it. And lead singer Jim James adapts himself to whatever stellar sounds are bubbling up behind him. Of course, we have a pair of lawn tickets to give away for their show at Merriweather Post Pavilion this Friday (8/12).

My Morning Jacket also happens to have a reputation as one of the best live bands around. In 2008, they played a set at Bonaroo—an environment famous for impressive, lengthy sets—that is said to have redefined epic. At the time, Stereogum summed it up nicely in an article headlined “My Morning Jacket Own. Everything.” Come be owned (the talented and versatile Neko Case opens) on Friday.

For a chance to win the tickets, tell us in the comments below, a song that owns.

It doesn’t have to be an MMJ song, but we nominate their newest, “Holdin on to Black Metal” from this year’s Circuital release.

The winner will be chosen Thursday (8/11) at noon.

I saw Neko in Bowling Green at an old movie theater which was converted into a night club. It was the first time I saw her live. She and her band owned everything they played that night. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with "prison girls." I haven't seen MMJ yet. I live four hours from Cleveland but having the chance to see them own some songs would be most appreciated.

My love affair w/ MMJ dates back to first hearing "Golden" & "
"Mangeetah" from It Still Moves; each gorgeous in it's own right -- both still make me woozy.

I had a crazy night in Denver a few years ago with a bottle of wine and MMJ's "Phone Went West" on repeat.  I was owned, to say the least.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 1 by The Flaming Lips is easily one of the best songs of the last decade.  Actually, that entire album of the same name owns entirely!  And if you don't think so, you clearly have never seen The Flaming Lips live.

Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt. 2 owns because it explains what happens when the music at shows touches me!

For my friends and I, it's "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. It's a very simple song, but it comes on and all conversation stops while we wait for the big kick! Don't dismiss it, go back and listen, and you'll go, "You're right, this song OWNS".

"Housequake" by Prince from Sign 'o' the Times.
From the get go he lets us know it's time pay attention to him, shouting, "Shut up , already; Damn!"

Later, he asks us if we know about the quake and even though we know we don't we tell him that we do and he calls our bluff and replies, "Bullshit."

He tells us to clap and we clap. Of course we clap; he's Prince.
