Weekend Shots!

Gig-wise, it’s a pretty quiet weekend here in D.C., but fear not, good times will still be had by all. The venues are abound with the standard, but never routine, DJs and movie screenings, plus some not-so-standard burlesque shows and air guitar competitions.

Friday (6/22) get up offa that thing and boogie to the Black Cat for Sandwich of Soul, where DJ Soul Call Paul will have you shimmying to your favorite sixties soul jams by James Brown, Tina Turner, and Stevie Wonder. This week’s Red Fridays at U Street Music Hall starts pumping at 10 p.m. with Timmy Regisford and Chris Burns, but come earlier at 7 p.m. for Boston-based soul singer Eli “Paperboy” Reed and openers Lily & The Parlour Tricks.

Prefer to do the rocking yourself? Friday, the 9:30 club is hosting D.C. regional competition of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships. Yes, that’s right — air guitar.

Singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn, formerly of D.C. duo Georgie James, takes the Black Cat with her solo effort The Mynabirds to promote her second album Generals, Saturday (6/23). Opening acts are Sean Bones and the self-described “transgendered reincarnation of a vacuous Andy Warhol Superstar” Edie Sedgwick who received rave reviews at Thursday’s Fort Reno concert.

The Red Palace is hosting Champagne Burlesque A Go-Go Saturday evening, a “sneak peek” of it’s new take on Sunday brunch. Come for the show, stay for the DJs.

Sunday’s (6/24) activities are slightly less sexy. For your stomach: the Rock & Roll Hotel serves it’s weekly Full Metal Brunch at noon. For your eyes: the Black Cat is screening Yellow Submarine at 8 p.m. For your ears: Jammin’ Java holds a Songwriters Circle tribute to Fleetwood Mac.
