TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

When I live my dream, I’ll take you with me / Riding on a golden horse / We’ll live within my castle, with people there to service you / Happy at the sound of your voice

Last Saturday night the “home phone” rang past midnight. Long gone are the days of having a phone (or should I say a landline) next to the bed. To be honest, we rarely pick up our landline. I often do during office hours, but my wife almost never does. In 2016, an old fashion ring feels sinister. Whether it be spam or sad news, if that phone rings in the middle of the night I jump up from sleep and run to pick it up.

Such was a call last Saturday around 12:30am. Even Susan woke saying, “Better pick that up.” I jumped out of bed, hustled to the phone, snatched it up, but it was too late. I checked the message—nothing. I checked my cell phone—quiet, so I went back to sleep to an uneasy feeling and weird dreams.

It wasn’t until late morning Sunday when I heard the news that Uncle Lexi, (Alexis Arquette) had passed away shortly after midnight. I knew Lexi was in the hospital and her condition was bad, but I was shocked she went so quickly. I was hit by a wave of sadness followed by an urge to write a short farewell on Facebook.

It’s fucking weird to feel the need to write an “OB” on Facebook, but sharing a few kind words about this wild and talented soul made me less melancholy.

I do not believe Alexis called me before she left this realm. It is true that one of her last wishes was to take her last breath to “Starman” from Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, and when I think of her I will always think of Bowie and late night phone calls. That’s my kind of exit, and I love her for that.

Do you think death is like a dream? It’s not the worst or scariest thought. We’ll see…

Travel safe Starqueen, here’s some more songs about dreams to send you on your way.
