TVD Recommends: Grammy GPS, A Road Map for Today’s Music Biz, 9/29

Becoming educated and hanging out with some of modern music’s most influential don’t always come hand-in-hand.

Thankfully, The Grammy’s GPS exists to mend this conundrum. This Saturday marks another installment of Grammy GPS, a concentrated effort put on by the Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy, whch aims to help those trying to break into the industry burst through the glass ceiling of amateurism. Every year the Grammys bring an assorted and impressive guest list of speakers, panels, and shows to the Stax Academy and local venues to educate and open doors for anyone overwhelmed or curious and musically ambitious.

This year begins Friday evening at the New Daisy with dirt-rustling Alabama Shakes. The Shakes will have a sit-down Q&A as well as a short exclusive performance for GPS members before they take the stage in a fullscale production for a sold-out show at the New Daisy.

Saturday carries with it the many panels and discussions of the weekend. This year, the Grammys snagged one hell of a catch by bringing in SubPop Co-Founder Jonathan Ponemon. In addition to an interview led by the Commercial Appeal’s Bob Mehr, Poneman will also appear on a “State of the Music Industry Super Panel,” in which a list of influential voices give their take in a question and answer session on the modern music business.

Speaking of the Super Panel, another grade-A pull is Talib Kweli. The intellectual and socially based hip hop artist is providing his two cents through the Super Panel, as well as an interview put on by Big Sue, a DJ of Memphis’ K97 FM that will be concentrated on, and titled, “Exploring Social Consciousness Through Hip Hop.”

Not to stop at the very top, the event also garners the talent and knowledge of Grammy-winning engineers Andrew Scheps and Chris Finney, Grammy-winning producer Steve Jordan, famed journalist Charlie Braxton, as well as many other knowledgable voices.

The wealth of information comes in tandem with performances from some Memphis stars, old and new, that include The Bo-Keys, Al Kapone, Deering & Down, DJ Charlie WhitePreauXX,Lvkah Lvciano, and more.

The event takes place this Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 10:30 a.m at the Stax Music Academy found at 926 East McLemore Ave. Admission is free for Members and $35 for nonmembers. For more information, visit the Grammy GPS website.
