TVD Recommends: Professor Marc Stone
at the Rendon Inn
tonight, 11/9

This evening, blues guitarist and historian Marc Stone will be presenting a lecture/performance at his regular Wednesday gig, which begins at 7 PM. It is open to the public.

Anyone who listens to Stone’s show on WWOZ knows that he is a authority on all forms of roots music who specializes in the many genres of the blues. He is also a well known performer and bandleader. So it comes as no surprise that Tulane Professor Joel Dinerstein has enlisted him as a guest in his “blues” class.

Stone intends to cover the development of various blues styles focusing on the transition of the form from the rural areas of the south to the urban centers of the north of the country. He will discuss the concurrent events in history that helped shape the music and how they are reflected back by the important musicians in each genre. Each phase of the lecture will include a musical performance that further elucidates the specific information that he is discussing.

Since he is a guitarist he will also provide information on various types of guitars and explain the role each instrument plays in the different styles of the blues.
