Weekend Shots!

Does everyone in New Orleans still feel a little out of it? Carnival is over; we had a three-day week, and now another weekend is here. That went quick didn’t it? If you’re up for some music, here are my picks for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday night, get your bounce on, get your Ash Wednesday blues cure, and support a worthy cause. A baker’s dozen of local bounce artists are raising money for a return visit to the SXSW music festival in Austin in March. The show is at Siberia, and I expect it to be as rowdy as the video.

Get there early to see the whole show featuring Katey Red, Big Freedia, Cheeky Blakk, and numerous others. Do not attempt those dance moves without stretching your booty.

Saturday night, Tift Merritt appears at Chickie Wah Wah. I don’t know if she even knows that Mardi Gas was this past Tuesday, and everyone is still recovering. Nevertheless, she hasn’t played a show in the city since 2008.

Four years is a long time if you are into her version of plaintive Americana—I guess that’s what they are calling it now. To me, she is just one of the better songwriters on the scene today who clearly should be better known. This should be a really intimate show.

Sunday night, Ziggy Marley appears at the House of Blues. It’s hard to believe that the charismatic singer who I first saw in the 1980s is now older than his legendary father was when he passed of cancer at the young age of 36. Ziggy always puts on an amazing show, and this night should be no exception.
