TVD Recommends: Johnny Dilks & the Highway Kind at One-Eyed Jack’s, 10/15

The 11-piece group hits at the French Quarter club at 9:30 PM. The band features three horns, four vocalists, and a driving rhythm section.

Their sound melds the best years of country music stars such as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams with the iconic soulful sounds of Ike & Tina Turner, Tony Joe White, and Ernie K-Doe. Then throw a little bit of Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass and you will start to get the picture.

Johnny Dilks & the Highway Kind have performed all across the country at clubs and festivals, including two appearances at New Orleans’ Bayou Boogaloo. Their debut album Rock Salt & Nails, was recorded at Fudge Recording Studios in New Orleans and was released in 2012.

I had the good fortune to hear this band at the Bayou Boogaloo and was suitably impressed. In a town with all kinds of great music, these guys present something unique.
