Nyce!’s The Smile Series makes its debut tonight at Tipitina’s, 5/17

Two years ago, the alt-pop band Nyce! started a DIY event in a New Orleans backyard. The event has grown organically and the organizers are bringing it to the granddaddy of New Orleans clubs. The doors open at Tipitina’s at 9 PM.

The semi-monthly concert series features local musicians, artists, and vendors. By creating an intimate environment, they bring together people who value creativity. Nyce! is headlining the event. The other bands on the bill include Loose Willis, Fruta Brutal, and the Braun-Wood Band. Visual art will be on display by Kara Heck and Allison Franz. Brown Girl Kitchen provides the food.

Nyce! has been featured twice in TVD. Last October we presented the premiere of their video “Sweet Samantha” and this past June we debuted “Where Do I Go From Here,” a new song off their album Quarter Life Crisis.

The members of the Braun-Wood Band are no strangers to the “pages” of TVD either. The group features the vocalists Mikayla Braun and Kathryn Rose Wood, two women carving out independent music careers in New Orleans that have joined forces to amplify their energy and talents synergistically.

Loose Willis will close the show and I don’t know much about the band, but they seem like a group to keep an eye out for. With tongue firmly in cheek, their press material warns, “It might be jazz.” Sounds like it’s just my thing with elements of pop and hip-hop to get you dancing.

Fruta Brutal is an indie, pan-Latin band with psychedelic tendencies, for lack of a better description, that will be celebrating the release of their first EP at Tipitina’s. The group also sounds right up my alley as they feature guitar, bass, drums, percussion, vibraphone, as well as flute.

Tickets are $10 in advance here or $12 at the door.
