Five from Five: 6/11/15

Five from Five is our recurring feature wherein TVD’s Mike Newman—he of Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records—shares with you all of the New York-centric things that he’s digging these days, from upcoming shows, to killer albums, to much more.

1. TONIGHT! Get thee to Rough Trade NYC for the magnificent Jacco Gardner! This Dutch pop-psych maestro and his band are amazing live…and will certainly will be playing great tunes from the brand-new Hypnophobia album.

2. FRIDAY NIGHT! Michael Rault, Heaters, and The Britanys at some place on Avenue A called Berlin. You haven’t heard of it either? No yeah, there’s an air of mystery surrounding this venue and this show, being put on by Holy Underground. Anyway, it’s 5 bones and will probably rule in many ways. Get there!

3. SATURDAY NIGHT! The Panache Northside Showcase at Baby’s All Right. Michael Rault and Heaters play again whilst they’re in New York, but you also get Calvin Love, EZTV, The Holydrug Couple, and Moonwalks. That is a VERY stacked lineup. Another good night for live music in New York.

4. Oh…and during the day on Saturday, check out this great show, which is part of Union Pool and Other Music’s Summer Thunder series. From 2-6pm, you’re looking at: BLUES CONTROL / HEX MESSAGE / OHAL / IMAGE MAN (DJ) / KEJE (DJ). THEN, you can head over to the Baby’s show above!

5. AND finally, check out this killer new YES box set called Progeny, which features 7 full live shows all from the same year, 1972. They all have the same setlist and to tie New York in, one of them was recorded in Uniondale, New York at Nassau Coliseum. This set is just for super fans like myself, but there’s also a version for more casual Yes listeners. That’s what’s in this YouTube playlist. Dig in…
