Blink-182 is back on the road for their “California Summer Tour” with a new singer/ guitarist (Matt Skiba) and a new album. Hitting amphitheaters across the country along with A Day to Remember and All Time Low, this punk rock extravaganza found itself at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
With the opening notes of All Time Low’s set, the crowd streamed to their seats so as not to miss a note. And while ATL would normally find themselves peppered with ladies undergarments by the time they wrapped their set, there was nary a thong nor bra to be found, but the place was on its feet and primed for more tunes.
Next up was A Day to Remember which pulled out a surprisingly robust stage setup considering supporting act status. As if that was not enough to get the audience’s attention, over the course of their 45 minute set, they proceeded to pull out giant beach balls, a t-shirt cannon, dozens of rolls of toilet paper, and streamers blasted across the front rows. This band clearly came to crush it and no doubt left the stage after closing out with “The Plot to Bomb the Panhandle” feeling the love.
The crew made quick work of the stage as Blink-182’s set approached. If the Shoreline was not sold out, it’s hard to imagine where any more bodies could fit as it felt like there were approximately 1.6 people per seat. When the curtain finally dropped revealing the band and a giant flaming “F**K,” the place went nuts.
Kicking things off on familiar ground with “Feeling This” followed by “What’s My Age Again?,” the trio locked in tight and rocked out hard as the entire amphitheater sang along. Massive LED screens lit the stage and were punctuated by giant sparklers, flames, and things that go bang really loudly. Life-sized blow-up dolls were served up by the crew from the back of the 100s section, but that all seemed superfluous to what was happening on stage.

The big looking question in people’s minds was undoubtedly whether or not the “new” Blink could pull it off. In short, Skiba nailed it. While certainly a more serious presence than his predecessor, there really wasn’t the need for more wackiness when you’ve got one Mark Hoppus standing to his right. Indeed, as they traded off on vocal duties, it became immediately clear why Skiba was the obvious choice … maybe even the only choice to replace DeLonge.
And the new material? With more songs off of California than any other Blink album, the band made a clear statement that the “new” Blink was to be taken seriously and the crowd ate it all up.
Breakups, reformations, squabbles, side projects, album delays and lineup changes have brought Blink-182 to the point that they are at today … surprisingly, a more cohesive band than they’ve been in years and clearly firing on all cylinders. Just ask Shoreline crowd of 22,000 strong.
