TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings From Laurel Canyon!

This week I found myself punching the clock, grinding through the work week like an April fool. I tried to enjoy making this week’s Idelic Hour but I’ve been tired. As I write I suffer from yet another headache, but despite feeling worn, my overwhelming feeling is one of gratitude. The words of Cody Chesnutt’s “headphone masterpiece” ring in my ears…

No Worries, No Stress, You Lucky Motherfucker
No Worries, No Stress, You Lucky Motherfucker
No Worries, No Stress, You Lucky Motherfucker

I live a rich life filled with many wonderful, interesting, and talented friends and artists. I also have a very cool family. Sometimes us Sidels feels like a shipwreck is about to happen, but truth is, we are very cool—charmed in fact.

Of late however, we Sidels could use a break. This hour of “idelic” music might be the only break we get today, but I for one will take and grasp it. The mix is dedicated to HK, the man at the head of the Sidel table. My dad, Kenny will turn 80 years old on Monday.

To say you’re a father is a wrong thing to do
While you whisper and falter, who am I to see?
I think I’m running away from you. I think I’m running away from you, while I wonder true.
For you I just feel love so deep. But you tell me I’m a drifter and I’m falling to the ground.
And that I’m running away from you. And that I’m finding away from you, while I wonder true.
The seasons, they grow like every other do. The years, they just follow like every other do.
And I don’t want to leave you down in the ground.

The man I call dad is no ordinary dude. The way I like to describe Kenny Sidel is that he is the last of the great New Yorkers. A fading generation who experienced and enjoyed the height of the greatest city in the history of mankind. The fucking guy is smart, intense, generous, and of late a real son of a bitch.

This last year Kenny and I have not been communicating all to well. It seems strange that I will not be with him Monday when he crosses 80. There has been some recent signs of hope. After all, I have great respect for what happens us when we get so far down the road. They way we view the world must be our “right.”

The karma of parenthood is also deep. My truth is I know we plan to celebrate real soon. To make it plain and simple “I have ya in me.” I guess this hour of music is for you, but really it’s for me (if that makes sense).

Love you dad. Thinking about you always. Happy Birthday.
