Greetings From Laurel Canyon!
This week, all things groovy about our city of rock ‘n’ roll, Los Angeles, converge in three days of the coolest bands and desert fun—Coachella, a brand synonymous with southern California music. It’s ours, it’s hot, and today starts Weekend Number 1.
For the past however many years I’ve been doing The Idelic Hour, this week’s show has been devoted to what I’ve called, “a parents guide to Coachella.” The idea was to help former hipsters keep up with the amazing taste of Coachella curator Paul Toilet. This year’s festival is again rich with all types of musical styles and artists of every size, shape, and color.
I have no doubt this weekend will be great, but Susan, Jonah, and I will continue our recent ritual of attending Coachella on Weekend 2. It’s a more relaxed vibe. With all the internet chat, trending posts and playlists that are going on today about Coachella, I’ve decided to step aside from the internet hype and devote this week’s Idelic Hour to a style of music that is completely alternative to anything at Coachella.
Call it break in the action for festival goers.
Next week I’ll spend my Idelic Hour reporting from the desert and pay homage to the coolest new music and Coachella victors. In the meantime, I find this Spring weekend the perfect time to celebrate the one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary of a most noble monument—La Torre Eiffel.
“Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World’s Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.98 million people ascended it in 2011. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.”
The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of all things French. It looks cool because it’s a symbol of modern before a modern look existed—a living relic from two centuries ago. Besides, it’s been a while since the Idelic Hour did an hour of straight classic French pop! You might want to download this one for the ride out to desert…
