Needle Drop: Just Like Honey, “Blind”

Düsseldorf-based quartet Just Like Honey create nostalgic jangle pop by blending ’90s-era Lilith Fair vibes with modern shoegaze grit.

The delicate cooing of lead vocalists Darlene Jonasson and Bianca Yang could be described as soul-stirring, coming across as 100% authentic in an age when most female indie songstresses find it necessary to add a toothsome affectation to their vocal delivery. Perhaps the band name hints at the mellow symbiosis created by this pair, but they truly provide a lovely, lilting effect to the music, which is met with the equally evocative rhythm section of brothers Patrick and Steve Le Mar.

Just Like Honey’s 2018 record, The Weight of the Stars, is chock-full of this kind of reminiscent rock, culminating in the sumptuous track “The Wild Things,” which certainly tips its hat to the dreamy, cinematic work of The Cranberries. After Darlene and Bianca finish stitching up their filmic thread, lead guitarist Patrick steps into that rarefied air to deliver one of the album’s finest moments in the form of a ghostly solo coda, which allows the track to shed its genre-specific sound and becomes something altogether unique and auspicious.
