Win a Free Download of Zeke Fishhead’s Snag

As Mardi Gras approaches in earnest, fans of the Radiators are lamenting the loss of our soundtrack of the season. As a way of assuaging the angst, TVD is offering a free copy of the latest full-length download from the pen of Ed Volker. Read on for details on how to win.

When Volker retired last June after over 33 years leading the celebrated New Orleans band, he said he wasn’t going to play in public for at least six months. But he never said he was going to quit composing. His new 12-song collection, Snag, is proof that the fertile mind of the poet is still kicking like the proverbial mule.

Two of the songs will be familiar to hardcore fishheads especially those enamored with the MOMs Ball, the underground Carnival party that the Radiators, as well as Volker’s earlier bands, played for over three decades. Last year’s theme song, “Last Lick” makes an appearance here, as does another rarity, “The Ballad of Delia Green,” known on set lists as “Delia’s Gone.”

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

This morning, the hippies in the canyon are talking about one thing—this groovy date of 11-11-11. Today, when the moon is the the 7th house and Jupiter aligns with Mars. The hope is that peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. Yes, today by most accounts is the first day of the Age of Aquarius.

Harmony and understanding,
Sympathy and trust abounding,
No more falsehoods or derisions,
Golden living dreams of visions,
Mystic crystal revelation,
And the mind’s true liberation,
Aquarius! Aquarius!

In anticipation of this 11-11/”hippie holiday,” I’ve been digging through my crates for several weeks. Honestly, I’m finding this new age a lot to live up to. When I finally pieced together my playlist, I felt like I had only one foot in the ethos of the Aquarian Age.

In the end, Idelic “Age of Aquarius” is a fairly straight forward mash-up of spiritual ’60s hippie gems and current blogger artists. Reading the famous lyrics form Hair (above) I’m thinking it’s one of those “How true, but totally not what I thought,” moments.

For whatever reason it’s not Brian Wilson, George Harrison, Love, The Beatles, The 5th Dimension, or Satanic Majesty’s Request playing in my head this morning—it’s Young Man, Frank Ocean, Of Monsters & Men, and Little Red. “My Sweet Lord!”

The Idelic Hit of the Week: Little Red – Rock It

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

The last few nights it’s felt like winter is finally creeping toward our little canyon. This week’s sunny days have been a hell of a lot warmer than people’s attitudes. Some “cold ass shit” has gone down. So, what better time than to snuggle up to a playlist of love songs.

About of month ago I heard an old 60′s Chess 7-inch on Diddy Wah. The record was called, “Dynamite Lovin” by Jackie Ross and it was love at first listen. I knew right there and then, a new lover’s playlist was a-coming.

Growing up as a record collector, I have always been into 7-inch records. This week’s playlist contains no less than seven 45′s. In the end, the set contains one half northern soul rarities and another half just amazing new records—the lion’s share sung by chicks. The quality of most of these new records is fairly “chillin.”

Hot off the press Idelic favorites: Atlas Sounds and the impressive Florence and The Machine start the party. The Stepkids, Friends, Purity Ring, Caveman, Polica make this an explosive session.

The Idelic Hit of the Week: First Aid Kit – The Lion’s Roar

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, bar none. (So boo!) Let’s have fun—and fun means rock n roll and this year’s annual Idelic Hour Halloween playlist!

I’ve always loved artists who’ve embraced the Halloween spirt 24/7. Whether it’s Screamin Jay, Lord Sutch, King Diamond, Manson, Alice, Siouxsie, or Danzig, they’ve all given us great comfort in an odd but real way. I was at a gig last weekend and happened to see that Danzig and Doyle will performing Misfits songs. Holy shit—what a dark, hard, evil, and amazing plan for Halloween!

My best wishes go out to all those brave enough to take the stage Monday and rock out in costume. I’m happy and proud to say it is something that I’ve done, painting myself silver almost head to toe for a wild bash in Williamsburg 20 years ago. (It seemed cool at the time? Certainly pre-Chili Peppers video, I may add.) My girlfriend at the time went as a nurse. Wow, what a wild time!

Enough reminiscing—it’s about this year’s plan. I hear it will jumping in Nashville at Mercy Lounge’s Werewolf Bar Mitzvah, LA rocks techo-style for Hardfest, and ol’ Williamsburg will be psychedelic, Halloween style, by The Black Angels. I for one have my costume ready. Who else but Danzig’s greatest influence, Wolverine!

Send us photos of your Halloween party!

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from New York City!

Winding down a hectic week at CMJ, it was an easy decision to dedicate this week’s Idelic Hour to all things “college rock.” I’ve always loved October in the city and this week the weather and many of the bands did not disappoint. I would dare say CMJ feels fresh again! Maybe a new era? Certainly blogs wield the power that college radio once did, but I can say from experience there is nothing quite like being at a radio station blasting the airwaves.

This CMJ season the winds of change were certainly blowing. R.E.M. retired this month and last week we read the sad news; Kim and Thurston “no moore!” Over the years I’ve followed, watched, listened, and have become Idelic friends with these bands.

I gotta say it was weird when I read on Pitchfork the Kim and Thurston news. Many of us have been there, so I want to send them both good vibes. I hope (our daughters) Zoe and Co Co go to college—maybe even start a band. Whether they can play worth a shit or not, I can’t think of anything more appropriate for a youngster.

My college band was called The Aromatic Prawn Experience named after our favorite late night dish. We were certainly no Sonic Youth but it was those jams that lead me here—to many Fall nights standing outside clubs at CMJ with friends. Always new friends! Great old friends! And as I repeatedly write in this column, it’s the people that I’ve met that have turned my rock ‘n roll journey into such a great life.

So, what did this week’s CMJ deliver us? Some great new shit. My favorite moments: the voice and soul of Alabama Shakes, groove of Electric Guest, grit and volume of Fidlar, psych of Guards, star power of Twin Shadow, and J Mascis and his guitar.

The Idelic Hit of the Week: Alabama Shakes – You Ain’t Alone
