TVD Ticket Giveaway: Chicago Mixtape 1 Year Anniversary Show at the Subterranean, 2/11

Let’s assume that you, like your TVD Chicago editors, love hearing and discovering great local music. The issue of course, is how to hear everything that Chicago has to offer. It’s not as if you can just get a playlist of fantastic local bands sent straight to your inbox every week, right? That, my friends, is where the Chicago Mixtape steps in to lend a hand.

The brainchild of Casey Meehan, the Chicago Mixtape aims to connect Chicago music fans with the music. The site hosts a weekly playlist that subscribers can download for the measly cost of an E-mail address.

With over 250,000 song downloads from nearly 300 local musicians, the Chicago Mixtape is celebrating it’s 1 year anniversary with a show this Saturday at the Subterranean.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Hit The Lights, Invicta (Signed!)

There will always be the bands that just make you feel good. The bands that tap into something nostalgic, dredging up memories of belting at the top of your lungs in your room while your stepmom tells you to turn it down from outside your locked door. (If you were like me, that was when you turned the dial and drowned her out, continuing your dance party for one.)

For me, those bands will always be the emo/punk bands that got me through high school and sent me off to college with a determined beat to my step as I made my way around campus.

One of the bands I remember noshing on frequently was Hit the Lights. I was stoked when they announced a new full-length would be released early this year. Now, the “Countdown to Invicta” is at a mere four days, and I couldn’t be more excited to set the needle on the record, free my hair from its perpetual ponytail, and dance around my room like I used to. Hell, I’m sure my roommate will gladly tell me to stop singing at the top of my lungs once I’ve got all these lyrics on lock in my ol’ mind. I’ve got a better sound system then I did in my teens, so I’m also certain drowning her out will be no problem.

Anyway, back to the band. Hit the Lights hails from Lima, OH. They’ve been steadily touring since 2003, playing on such notable tours as Bamboozle, Warped, and a sold-out headlining tour. They’ve played alongside a variety of bands such as Hellogoodbye, Paramore, and New Found Glory to name a few, and they were on the Billboard Top 100 with their last album, Skip School, Start Fights.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Grieves’ Together Apart

Lately, it has been hard to remember that it is in fact winter in Colorado. Jackets are light, and the snow has been lighter, and this January has turned your favorite slope into the world’s longest water slide. While the elusive snow may inhibit some crucial downtime on the slopes, it definitely will make for a more pleasant outdoor experience at Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks.

This is the first winter concert in Red Rocks’ history, featuring Grieves & Budo, Atmosphere, and Common, this Friday, January 27th, at Red Rocks Ampitheater, so at least for this week, I am rooting for the warm weather.

Wrap up warm, and Grieves’ chill beats will help defrost your dancing shoes. Colorado native Benjamin Laub (aka Grieves) is a lyrical talent to watch; his music is derived from real pain and experience that bring the words and the emotion to life. He paired up with Budo in 2008, and they have been supplying a steady dose of hypnotic flow with multi-instrumental rhythms and intensified lyrical narratives. The duo is joining the likes of T-Pain and Gym Class Heros for the 2012 SnowStorm Music Tour starting in February, but you have the chance to see them first at Red Rocks.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Mountain Goats with Nurses at Tipitina’s, 1/21

Here’s your chance to see these two bands on Saturday night for free. A free pair of tickets will go to the person who leaves the most heartfelt comment about why either of these bands is important to you personally. The winner will be chosen tomorrow afternoon at 5 PM and will be notified by e-mail.

John Darnielle has been performing as Mountain Goats since 1991 when he was still on college. Over the years, he has collaborated with various other musicians. The group is now a trio that brings Darnielle’s compelling songs to life on stage. Here’s some more stuff about Mountain Goats from our team in Washington, D.C. and Chapel Hill.

Nurses is also an indie rock trio. They are touring in support of their most recent release, Dracula, which came out last year. TVD recently gave tickets away to see Nurses in Denver. Here’s what our correspondent had to say.

If “piano-pop-rock” means anything to you, then chances are you know Jack’s Mannequin. It’s what they do, and they are damn good at it.

What started as a side project for Something Corporate front-man Andrew McMahon, has grown into a full-fledged band. With 3 studio albums, a handful of EPs, and the #1 spot on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart, Jack’s Mannequin definitely deserves to be on your radar.

Currently making their way across the country in support of the new record, People and Things, Jack’s Mannequin will be headlining a SOLD OUT show at the House of Blues next Tuesday (1/24).

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Filligar at the Subterranean, 1/13

Making a record is no easy task. Nevertheless, the boys of Filligar have been hard at work in Chicago, since we last spoke in November, writing and recording their upcoming release.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Fess Fest at Tipitina’s, Sunday, 12/18

Professor Longhair would have turned 93 this coming Monday. To celebrate his life, Tipitina’s is hosting the second annual Fess Fest on Sunday night. The Vinyl District has two pairs of tickets to give away. Just post a comment for a chance to win. The deadline to enter is 5 PM tomorrow.

The music at Fess Fest is going to be off the hook. The saxophonist and educator Donald Harrison, Jr. (he works closely with the Tips interns) leads the Tipitina’s All-Star Band. Stealing Sheep: rare
