The TVD Record Store Club for 12/11/15

Welcome to the TVD Record Store Club for the week ending 12/11/15.

The TVD Record Store Club is another free feature we’ve added to The TVD Record Store Locator App that recently relaunched refreshed and rebranded. The Club points to a record store agenda that we’re assembling for your weekend now that new release vinyl lands in stores on Fridays—AND for the early part of the week coming when those mom and pops could use the foot traffic.

Every Thursday we’ll be tipping you off right here at TVD—and within the app at the Club tab—to releases of merit newly on store shelves, along with in-store ticket giveaways you can win by simply waving the app, pricing incentives, contests, cool partner initiatives, and a host of surprises we’re looking forward to putting in your pocket on the regular.

We’ve got a rather jam-packed TVD Record Store Club agenda for your weekend, friends. For your radar, we’ve got vinyl releases from Grimes, Rancid, and Spoon to hip you to.

LA’s Origami Vinyl hosts Bob Forrest for an intimate in-store this Saturday, and the first 3 of you who display the TVD Record Store Locator app upon entry will take home his new release on vinyl.

Our friends at Level Frames are putting your favorite vinyl releases well, in frames, (beautifully, we’ll add) and we’ve finagled a killer deal for all of you this holiday gift giving season.

AND—we have a special Rolling Stones litho and vinyl LP combo you can enter to win, on us. All your info is right here!

Now, onward!

Grimes, Art Angels | Spanning over 14 tracks, the new album features collaborations with Janelle Monáe and newcomer, Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes. It was recorded primarily in her home studio in Los Angeles, CA, where she relocated to in 2014.

Like all of her previous albums, Art Angels was written and recorded entirely as a solo endeavor. The new album features more live instrumentation than ever before on a Grimes record. She plays piano, guitar, and violin, continuing her evolution as a musician and a producer for her most ambitious album to date.

Spoon, Gimme Fiction (2LP Deluxe Edition) | To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spoon classic, Merge will release a deluxe limited-edition version of Gimme Fiction on double-LP (180g) and double-CD. The reissue contains the album remastered by Howie Weinberg from the original tapes, a second disc with 12 previously unreleased demos from the era, nine additional bonus tracks via digital download, and a full-color book containing photos and an extensive oral history of the making of the album. The deluxe LP package will also include a 24” x 36” poster.

Gimme Fiction dragged the sonic pointillism of Kill the Moonlight further into dub-influenced weirdness as the increasingly confident Spoon went crazy in the studio, experimenting with everything from warped hip-hop samples to horse whinnies. How all this directionless Dylan worship and psychedelic goofing resulted in an album as sharply realized as Gimme Fiction is a testament solely to Spoon’s self-assurance and tastefulness (and some hard work, and a bit of luck, etc.).

Whatever digging or strange alchemy had to go into it, they only produced more gold. Gimme Fiction deserves special recognition because it’s the album where Spoon—backed into a corner—took some crazy leaps, all of them forward. It’s a “departure point” for a band that, lucky for us, has never made a real departure. And when it came time for a reissue, we knew it deserved a lasting place on vinyl, right alongside every other indispensable record in Spoon’s discography.

Rancid, …and Out Come The Wolves (Limited Edition, 180 Gram Vinyl, Includes Download Card) | To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this very special release in our history, Epitaph Records is proud to present the deluxe 20th Anniversary edition of Rancid’s …and Out Come The Wolves.

Released at the height of the ’90s wave of punk resurgence, …and Out Come The Wolves is arguably on the most important albums of that decade and features tracks that became punk standards.

Album covers make up some of the most recognizable and culturally significant imagery of all time. Level Frames is inspired to honor and elevate this artform with a unique method of framing actual records such that the album cover shows in full while the vinyl peeks out of its sleeve.

Level Frames starts with 100% authentic vinyl records, using audiophile grade pressings when available, brand new, and never touched by human hands.

Each frame is then made from sustainably-harvested American-grown wood, with custom cut, 6-ply, acid-free matting holding the cover and vinyl in place. Protecting everything is a framers grade, anti-reflective acrylic that blocks potentially harmful UV rays and cuts down on glare. The hand-selected materials and artisan craftsmanship create the perfect way to showcase appreciation for your favorite artists’ mastery of their craft.

Nearly 100 titles are already available framed starting at $170, and we are hunting down even more by special request.

Head to Level Frames for 15% off and free shipping!
This exclusive TVD Record Store Club offer ends on 12/31/15.

Bob Forrest at Origami Vinyl, Saturday 12/12: A Special TVD Record Store Club In-store Vinyl Giveaway!

On Saturday, 12/12, LA’s Origami Vinyl will be hosting the acclaimed singer-songwriter Bob Forrest for an intimate performance at 7PM.

Looking back on his career, he’s been the frontman for legendary bands Thelonious Monster and the Bicycle Thief. He discovered guitarists John Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer for those bands, respectively. Both left him to join Forrest’s contemporaries in the L.A. music scene—a little band called the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

He’s played Carnegie Hall alongside Bob Mould and Bettye LaVette, and has been featured on the soundtrack for the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There. Now Forrest is releasing his first official solo album, Survival Songs, one that explores his original material, both old and new. Full details are here!

Exclusively for TVD app users—have those phones at the ready! The first 3 of you to display the app upon entry will receive a copy of Bob Forrest’s Survival Songs on vinyl—courtesy of Origami and Six Degrees Records!

Can’t get out to a record store this weekend to grab our featured releases and incentives? Our friends and partners at SoundStageDirect have your back. Receive 11% off your vinyl order by typing in “TVD11” at checkout.
