The Single Girl:
The Murder Barn
“Gotta Good Man” EP

London six piece, The Murder Barn have been busy this year launching their music straight into the heard of the UK’s rock scene. They write, record, and create everything in their own little creative hub (aptly named “The Murder Barn!”) and it’s clear from their videos and output in the last 12-months they’ve got a lot going on in those busy brains of theirs.

“Gotta Good Man” is the band’s debut EP and it’s a perfect showcase of the band’s feel and sound. Right from the start, title track “Gotta Good Man” gives you an indication the their influences with hints of Patti Smith’s heart-breakingly powerful vocals but a PJ Harvey-esque edge. When they crescendo into the chorus, Chesca Dolecka’s vocals really soar and send shivers through your bones.

“Wall Up The Family” has that signature “Murder Barn feel” to it; this is dirty, sexy rock that’s honest and real. It’s refreshing to hear a band with plugged in guitars (a novelty these days!) unafraid to keep their sound organic and free of unnecessary over-produced polish.

The Murder Barn’s uncomplicated sound doesn’t rely on any tricks and this is especially evident on “Death Is Still Defeat.” Stripping everything back to just Chesca and a piano, it’s here you realise that their songwriting talent extends far beyond the straight, verse, chorus, verse as gorgeous vocals pierce the the track’s delicate melodic atmosphere.

After this beautiful turn, the band head straight back into “Don’t You Look Well,” which has a quirky, western feel to it. This is a band with many strings to their rock n roll bow. They’re accomplished musicians and talented creatives that are making some of the best rock music out there at the moment, which is refreshing considering the amount of indie, electro, haircut bands that are making their way in the scene. The Murder Barn have real talent and deserve to be heard.
