AM & Shawn Lee: The TVD Mixtape Series

AM & Shawn Lee have sent us three mixtapes that we’re delighted to debut over the coming days which encompass tracks from the duo’s personal record collections.

They’ve split the tracks up into three mixes: Tuesday’s “Secret Process Mixtape” (a mix of American Moog funk, Eastern Euro Sound Library, and synth bliss), Wednesday’s “Golden Image Mixtape” (a mix of American Cosmic funk, Italian Soundtrack, and British Sound Library), and lastly today’s “Blasto Mixtape” (a mix of Italo funk, American Soul, and Psych Boogie.)

THE BLASTO MIXTAPE | “A mix of Italo funk, American Soul, and Psych Boogie. This mix was a zen concoction of both similar feel and tempos. Starting off with “The Rain” from my upcoming collab album with Adrian Quesada called The Electric Peanut Butter Company.

It also features Italian Supremo Lucio Batisti (who we both love), an old favourite from CAN, the man Sixto Rodriguez, recent fav The Unknown Mortal Orchestra with “So Good At Being In Trouble.” The mix finishes with an obscure, dusty old soul cut by one Frank Hutson courtesy of Cool Chris from the Groove Merchant. The sound of where yesterday meets today!

Paperhaus looks beyond the Living Room

For the most part, DIY show spaces often have a laissez-faire way of functioning. The “anything goes” modus operandi has its quirks and perks, but also pitfalls, and as anything goes, in time, so do the places that host the shows.

Alex Tebeleff of Paperhaus knows this all too well. When he moved to DC in 2010, he became a recurring visitor to a string of DIY spaces, sticking around long after events ended to learn more about the spaces and to connect with their hosts. One particular bond he developed was with Luke Stewart and Brandon Moses of Laughing Man. The two of them ran shows out of Red Door, a little nook in the now long-gone Gold Leaf Studios. Witnessing unique, intimate performances as well as obstacles that spaces like Red Door faced gave Tebeleff enough inspiration as well as motivation to try to host shows out of his house.

Naming the space after their band, Paperhaus turned their living room into a stage as well as a reliable, although sometimes rowdy, place for bands to crash post-performance. Each housemate carried out show duties, from collecting donations to managing possible noise problems. Somehow, over the past two years, they were able to take a residential row house and transform it into a prominent DIY venue, having high-profile acts come through, like The Luyas, Julian Lynch, and Father Figures.

TVD Recommends:
Twin Forks at the
North Star Bar, 9/26

Former Further Seems Forever and Dashboard Confessional leader Chris Carrabba and his latest outfit Twin Forks stop by Philadelphia tonight to show off their debut EP.

Many remember Chris Carrabba as the singer and songwriter for the early 2000s emo band Dashboard Confessional. Before that he was the original singer in the Pompano Beach, FL band Further Seems Forever. Now Carrabba has returned again with yet another band, Twin Forks. The four piece band also includes former members from The Narrative and Bad Books.

In what began as a creative outlet from Dashboard Confessional, Twin Forks has taken Carrabba down a more traditional folk route. A rawness is still present in the songs, but instead of coming in the form of emotive lyrics (a la Dashboard and to an extent Further Seems Forever), it comes in a more instrumental form. Pop sensibilities and notions can still be found in the songs, but they come with finger-picking guitar and mandolin melodies.

Graded on a Curve: Velocity Girl, “I Don’t Care if You Go” b/w “Always”

Today, many will remember Velocity Girl mainly for the trio of albums they released in the mid-‘90s via the Sub Pop record label. The band’s beginnings stretch back to 1989 however, where they served as one of the foundational acts on the long serving imprint Slumberland. Their debut 45, 1990’s “I Don’t Care if You Go” b/w “Always,” was one of the first signs of life from the soon to be widespread US-based indie pop resurgence, and it continues to come off like a little gem. It also documents Velocity Girl’s brief intersection with the vocal charms of future Unrest/Air Miami member Bridget Cross, an association that only increases the single’s sweetness.

Like most fans of live music, I find it preferable to catch shows in the company of friends. Obviously, the spirit of camaraderie can add much value in the moment and by extension deepen the good memories of said event, making them more vivid than would be the case if simply shared with a roomful of strangers. And more pragmatically, it’s always nice to have someone to talk to in the back of the building when the band on stage is somehow defeating your expectations for the night in question.

But the situation isn’t completely cut-and-dried. For example, I once had a friend whose attitude towards gig-attendance was to skip the preliminaries and arrive at the club as close to main event as possible. Only on a rare occasion would an opening act inspire his interest, and when it didn’t he could be downright crafty at stretching out the duration of pre-show rituals such as record shopping, dining, and imbibing.

Yes, one round of drinks would inevitably become three, and subtle hints to move our asses across town to the floor in front of the stage would naturally get deflected. Since using a more direct motivational approach risked injuring the guy’s rather fragile self-esteem, a result that was far worse than missing nearly any opener, more than a couple of opportunities to witness opening bands, some of which went on to much bigger things, were missed by myself and others of our mutual acquaintance.

TVD Live: Imagine Dragons at Merriweather Post Pavilion, 9/20

When Imagine Dragons took the stage to the sold-out Merriweather Post Pavilion last Friday night, the crowd could not have known what they were in for. Lead vocalist Dan Reynolds charged the stage and led his fellow bandmates on a pulse-pounding, non-stop barrage of high energy songs that went on well into the night.

If you don’t know the band Imagine Dragons by now, you have either been hiding in a witness protection program, ice fishing in the arctic for a few years, or like the old saying goes, living under a rock somewhere. Odds are that even if you don’t know the band by name, you have probably have at least heard a few of their tunes either coming through your car radio, over the loudspeakers at a shopping mall, or leaking out from the depths of your subconscious as socially induced white noise. Point being, this band is everywhere right now, and even if you don’t intimately know their music, you probably know their songs.

The stage setup was armed with drums and percussion instruments of all sorts. Reynolds literally ran around the stage during and in-between songs, moving from one drum station to the next for their entire set. Imagine Dragons bring so much raw energy to the stage, it radiates from each member of the band to form this halo-like glow that wraps around the entire crowd. It is obvious that they want to give their fans the best show experience they can give them, and they do. Their energy never seemed to fade throughout the night, and I can safely say that this is the biggest stage presence that I’ve seen from any band all year.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Stars at the 9:30 Club, 9/30

Hailing from Montreal, the five-piece band Stars is described by ATO Records as “Canada’s best kept secret indie institution.”

Well, the secret’s out (and has been for nearly a decade), and so is Stars’ sixth studio album. Titled The North, the album features 12 tracks that entrance listeners with their atmospheric, somewhat disco-reminiscent beats. A year after its release, Stars has announced the release of a limited edition 7″ single that will have two new tracks that didn’t make it onto The North. The A-side track, “Wishful,” had already been revealed. The B-side track, “The Light,” was just announced last week.

In addition to the limited edition vinyl, Stars are embarking on a fall tour. The brief tour includes a date at the 9:30 Club on September 30, and we have a pair of tickets to give away.

Hurray for the Riff Raff takes to the road for North American tour

The Americana music darlings perform tonight at One Eyed Jack’s before heading out on an ambitious 33 date tour that takes them all across this land of ours including stops in California, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, New England, New York City, and Nashville before winding up mid November in South Carolina.

If principal songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra is looking for inspiration she will certainly find it on this epic road trip. Reflecting the band’s new cachet in certain circles, they will perform numerous one-night stands in clubs like the Soda Bar in San Diego and the Beachland Tavern in Cleveland, which are on nobody’s maps, while also playing two nights at the revered Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and a show at the hipster heaven known as the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York.

Much of the attention swirling around Segara and her band stems from their recent signing with ATO Records—the label that is owned by Dave Matthews and is home to another band, the Alabama Shakes, whose trajectory the HFTRR gang would undoubtedly like to emulate.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Lissie at the 9:30 Club, 11/24

Lissie is pretty lady with a sultry voice and sort of an oddball success story. The folky artist first gained recognition through dance tracks worked on by DJ Harry and Deadmau5. After she began releasing her own music in the late 2000s, Lissie gained a quick audience through her debut album Catching a Tiger and its resulting hits, “When I’m Alone” and “Cuckoo.”

Three years down the line and much more well-known, Lissie is poised to release her second album Back to Forever. The release arrives in US record stores on October 8, unfolding a matured and focused follow-up to her initial breakthrough.

Lissie is coming to the 9:30 Club on November 24, and she’ll be joined by the talents of the Kopecky Family Band, and we have tickets to give away before you can even buy them.

Now, Mix 2!

THE GOLDEN IMAGE MIXTAPE | “A mix of American Cosmic funk, Italian Soundtrack, and British Sound Library. Again we had to give it up for Carol Kaye intro-ing this one. Heard there is a documentary coming out on her soon? She’s definitely an AM & Shawn Lee favorite and if her work on David Axelrod’s Capitol recordings doesn’t make you a fan, there is something wrong with you. Again we take it deep into library territory after that, but make a brief pit stop into one of the best ’70s electronic albums: Mort Garson’s Plantasia.

I scored this bad boy for $3.75 (don’t be a fool and pay $100 for this LP as some people are trying to sell it for.) As the title suggests this LP was meant to play for your plants! It was also given away with Simmons mattress purchases when it came out in 1976. Just one more reason why the ’70s had it right!

And finally the mix just wouldn’t be complete without a tip of the hat to the Italians with Franco Micalizzi’s impossible to find score for I Due Volti Della Paura! —AM

Graded on a Curve: Body/Head,
Coming Apart

Since her former band ceased operations in 2011, Kim Gordon’s musical activity has largely flown under the radar. But with Body/Head, her experimental partnership with guitarist Bill Nace, she strides boldly into the post-Sonic Youth era.

In comparison to the recent high-profile recordings by her Sonic Youth cohorts, Coming Apart is easily the most challenging, and it’s also a cinch to divide the group’s fans into two camps. Folks who suffered the band’s excursions into abrasion and abstraction in want of their mastery of melodiousness and rock will probably find this sprawling effort to be a confounding and/or repellant mess. Conversely, those with a kinder disposition toward SY’s “out” side, and Gordon’s wildcard contribution in particular, will just as likely welcome it with open ears. But in doing so, they will still likely be struck by the severity of its design.

Sonic Youth’s work stoppage certainly had an impact on all of its members, but three-fourths of the group jumped into the musical fray with a fair amount of quickness. For instance, Steve Shelley began drumming in numerous settings, most notably as a member of the Chicago band Disappears and as a guest on SY guitarist Lee Ranaldo’s enjoyable if somewhat reserved 2012 LP Between the Times and Tides.

Unsurprisingly, the band’s most prominent (and prolific) guitar wielder has kept busy with a variety of underground collaborations. But the debut LP from Chelsea Light Moving, Thurston Moore’s biggest project thus far in terms of media attention and sales figures, is also the one post-hiatus (though perhaps the more appropriate term now is post-dissolution) record by a SY figure to really embody the outfit’s later, “mature” rock sensibility.

TVD Live: Virgin
Mobile FreeFest at Merriweather Post Pavilion, 9/21

PHOTOS: RICHIE DOWNS & AMY WILLARD | The rain did its best to put a damper on this year’s Virgin Mobile FreeFest, but it couldn’t stop a sold-out crowd from enjoying another year of free music.

While it did not start until about midday Saturday, 2013’s Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be remembered for the rains that tortured the grounds at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Despite the wet and soggy conditions, the sold-out crowd was treated to a day and night full of great acts.

Following suit from prior years, this year’s line up kept up the tradition of offering 50,000 attendees an eclectic and diverse group of DJs, singers and bands. Headlined by Vampire Weekend and Pretty Lights, there was a little bit of something for every type of fan.

I arrived early enough to check out the acts opening the different stages. The rain held off for the first couple hours, but anyone could feel it in the air that it was going to be a wet day. As I made my way through the festival grounds towards the West Stage for model/singer Sky Ferreira’s early set, I was able to check out a few of the other attractions like a carnival-esque funhouse and fuzzy mustache seesaws.

TVD Live: Riot Fest Chicago at Humboldt Park, 9/13–9/15

PHOTOS: DAN JARVIS | Chicago’s Riot Fest has come and gone, and I am in still recovering from the three days of musical nirvana I experienced in Humboldt Park. The weekend, full of rain and expensive beer, luckily also included an uncanny amount of powerful musical acts that ranged from punk rock to rap and many genres in between.

Friday was “Riot Fest Lite” for me. Arriving later in the afternoon, the first day was in full swing as we passed through the gates. The wristband, beer ticket, and beverage lines were all a mile long, and after a quick hour-long wait I was ready to enjoy some music.

That evening, I floated between stages, catching GWAR, Sublime with Rome, and even a minute or two of Fall Out Boy’s performance with an occasional stop to see the fire spinners and hula-hoopers.

Riot Fest-20

Never knowing what they’ll do next, GWAR once again hit the Riot Fest stage with their abrasive live show. Say what you will about their music, but do they ever know how to put on a show. Last year they aborted Snooki’s baby on stage, and this year they tore the head off Super Zombie Jesus, all done with a great sense of pride and in the name of their home planet of Scumdogia.

Now, onto Mix 1!

THE SECRET PROCESS MIXTAPE | “A mix of American Moog funk, Eastern Euro Sound Library and synth bliss. I got a lesson book and CD from Carol Kaye at one of her bass seminars in LA and when I popped this thing in it was whack! All these excerpts (from cassette?) of her teaching and talking…needles to say I had to intro with it and follow with a much slept on LP from Hugo Montenegro. It’s a Stevie Wonder Moog cover album. Montenegro did a few of these and they are all brilliant. I picked it up for $2.00!

The mix continues with music both Shawn Lee and I have a mutual obsession with…library music. We picked from a bunch of different stuff from British to German and even American library. The final track, “Secret Process,” is from an Omnimusic record which was an American library company. Super hard to find LPs as most of the stuff on this mix is.”

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Atoms for Peace at the Patriot Center, 9/30

Rarely does the term “supergroup” conjure images of longstanding success in the rock world. But then, only one of them is lead by Thom Yorke.

In 2009, a few years after releasing his first solo album, Radiohead’s front man began collaborating on a side project with producer Nigel Godrich and Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Later joined by drummer Joey Waronker (of Beck and R.E.M.) and percussionist Mauro Refosco (of Forro in the Dark), the band gave its first performance in L.A. before it even had a name.

Luckily, the anonymous lineup has since established a name for itself—and possibly redefined the idea of the supergroup, once described as a “potent but short-lived rock phenomenon.” After making its official debut at Coachella in 2010, Atoms for Peace toured briefly around the U.S. and finished its first album in 2012. The product was Amok, a psychedelic set of digitally-manipulated jam sessions that easily rivals the groove-worthiness of Yorke’s prior endeavors.
