In rotation: 7/1/16

Watch Yoko Ono’s Farewell to NYC Record Store Other Music, Sharon Van Etten, Bill Callahan, Frankie Cosmos, Yo La Tengo and more played tribute show at Bowery Ballroom: Yoko Ono made a surprise appearance during the five-hour send-off to revered New York City record store Other Music Wednesday night, which officially closed on Saturday, June 25th.

Other Music, closed for good (Rebel Rebel, too): After almost 21 years in business, Manhattan’s great record store Other Music shut its doors for good Saturday night (6/25). A sad day, but OM’s last day in business was pretty much a party when I showed up around 7 PM, for their last hour. Drinks were handed out to long time customers, and current/former staffers DJ’d all night. The store kept normal hours, closing the doors at 8 PM but let customers and friends linger inside, with the last sale around 10 PM.

Rent increase pushes Peacock’s Record Bar from downtown Oxnard: Richard Ordaz needs more moving boxes. Actually, what he really needs is more garage space. Over the weekend Ordaz closed Peacock’s Record Bar, a shop selling music since the 1950s in downtown Oxnard. Ordaz, 46, of Oxnard, has owned the store specializing in old school CDs, records and cassettes for the past two decades. He bought the store after working there for just six months.

The definitive guide to Oslo’s record shops: Norway’s capital is small in size compared to its European equivalents but, when it comes to music it delivers on a par with many of its larger peers. Around 2/3 of the Norwegian population regularly attend concerts, and 1/3 make it to festivals every year. It’s no surprise then that Oslo offers a rich and diverse range of record stores and music spots in and around its compact centre.

Vinyl record festival in Penarth: Vinyl records have seen a resurgence in popularity over the last few years, but in Oxfam Penarth vinyl never went away! The charity shop in Penarth is preparing for its third vinyl record promotion this autumn. Staff hope to have more than 300 singles on sale. The Oxfam shop has built up a loyal following of record collectors and has focused on bringing high-quality vinyl to its customers.

Better Than the Average Bar Crawl: Check Out This Incredible NYC Record Store Crawl!: Drinking in New York City is good fun. There’s a bar practically everywhere and even better there are rooftop bars everywhere. So, you’ve probably done a bar crawl. Let’s be real, you’ve probably done a bunch. You’ve done themed ones and adventurous ones. You avoid SantaCon because of how unjolly it can be. And if you’ve never done it before, a rooftop bar crawl is phenomenal and we want you to experience it too. Now, there is a crawl that will get your ears buzzing with excitement.

Nostalgia and a scent of vinyl at Pinchbeck record shop’s radio coffee morning: A taste of rock nostalgia is coming to Pinchbeck where the music kings of old will meet a broadcaster of the current age next Wednesday. Guitarist Ray Fenwick, best known for writing the theme to cult children’s TV show Magpie, drummer Gilson Lavis and legendary Spalding soul DJ Eggy Molen will all be at Spalding Lifestyle Centre, Spalding Road, Pinchbeck, on Wednesday, July 6, between 9am and noon. The trio, along with BBC Radio Lincolnshire presenter Melvyn Morgan, will all be guests of Alan Barnsdale of Uptown Vinyl Records music shop inside the retail centre, next to Johnson Community Hospital.

The 57 Most Influential Album Covers: A critic once conceded that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. They had a point. Painting or drawing about music, however, is another subject altogether. Album cover artwork is a case in point, often helping to encapsulate the emotional direction of an entire album. Sound and vision come together in our list of 57 of the greatest ever album covers, while restricting ourselves to just one cover per musical artist.
