Redwood City, CA | Gary Saxon, owner of The Record Man, dies at 82: Saxon opened The Record Man in 1988 and helped make the vinyl shop a Redwood City fixture. Gary Saxon, the longtime owner of The Record Man and a revered figure in Redwood City’s community, died on May 6. He was 82. Saxon opened the Record Man, a vinyl record shop on El Camino Real in 1988. The store was family-run, a place his daughter, Athena Saxon, 28, remembers spending more time at growing up than in their small family home. “This was our playground,” Athena Saxon said of the shop. “Weekends, we were at the store, my sister and I were running around the parking lot, we were making forts out of boxes, we were climbing over roofs, running around, we were causing havoc with the boys, with the people in the back store, and playing games.” When asked how to describe her father, Athena said: “Awesome.”
Chicago, IL | High Voltage Records And Hi-Fi Opens In Rogers Park To Help Gen Z Get Their Collections Started: Shop owner Daniel Ranegar aims to help a younger generation of vinyl fans find the perfect record and set up a reliable and inexpensive stereo system. The owner of High Voltage Records and Hi-Fi will tell you that vinyl records are kind of a pain. Flipping them over to hear the other side is a chore, and a record collection can quickly outgrow an apartment. But what got Daniel Ranegar started as a vinyl collector was listening to original mixes and chasing rare finds. And with plenty of fellow young people jumping on the vinyl resurgence trend, Ranegar is hoping to help a new generation of record collectors get their start—both to take advantage of the aesthetic and the sound.
New York, NY | New Record Store, Sweet Peanut Records, Coming to Amsterdam Avenue: A 32-year-old former wealth manager is leaving a decade in finance behind for a passion project on Amsterdam Avenue—and a storefront currently mid-spackle is targeting a mid-summer reopening as something that doesn’t quite exist this far north on the Upper West Side. Sweet Peanut Records, an independent vinyl-focused shop, is planning a mid-July opening at 463 Amsterdam Avenue, between West 82nd and 83rd streets. The space was most recently home to Modern Day Optx. Owner Hunter Brammer, who moved to the Upper West Side from Washington, D.C. five years ago and is originally from North Carolina, said the store will carry mostly vinyl alongside some CDs and cassettes, both new and used.
Manchester, UK | When Ian Brown pays a surprise visit to your shop armed with a pen: A record store in Altrincham was left star-struck when Ian Brown popped into their shop. Stone Roses star Ian Brown was spotted paying a surprise visit to the Altrincham record store Tasty Records today, May 21. The musician and lead singer of the iconic Manchester band ‘popped into’ the shop in Trafford this afternoon ahead of the Manichester tribute event for his late bandmate Gary “Mani” Mounfield later this month. Posting about the visit on Instagram, the record store said that Ian, who grew up in Timperley, came into the shop today and asked them if they wanted anything signed before jokingly asking if they can get an instore session from him ‘next time he visits.’ The post shows Ian holding up a signed copy of the Stone Roses’ debut album – something that the store says it might sell for ‘a reet good offer.’
Ithica, NY | A Civic Award for a Record Store: From Elvis to the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Public Enemy, rock music (loosely defined: all these musicians are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) is supposed to represent rebellion, not respectability. It’s a target for Parental Advisory Warnings and condemnation by authorities. So it might be surprising to find a government award for civic contributions going to a record store, particularly one with an acerbic name like Angry Mom Records. It certainly was surprising to George Johann, the owner of Angry Mom Records in Ithaca. “It was out of the blue,” George said. “They just reached out to me and said they wanted to give me this award for, what was it?” He paused to recall the phrasing. “Contributing to the artistic culture of New York State.”
Georgetown, KY | Vinyl shop decks out youth skaters: In a basement below Georgetown Underground, a vinyl record store downtown, a small work station is stocked with wheels, decks, griptape, and other spare skateboard parts. The setup is where music store staff have spent the last few months building and refurbishing skateboards to be donated to local youth. Since the beginning of 2026, Georgetown Underground’s skateboard program has donated 18 boards to kids in Scott County, Store Manager Casey Caldwell said. Nine more are on the waiting list as of Tuesday, May 19, and should soon receive their boards. Most of the program’s skateboards are donated—some redistributed as-is, and others refurbished using a mix of salvageable spare parts, Caldwell said. Georgetown Underground has accepted new and used boards of almost any condition.
