Harrisonburg, VA | Record shop brings new sound to downtown Harrisonburg: Visitors to the north end of downtown Harrisonburg may notice a new sound coming from underground. Rhythm & Vinyl, a record and music shop in the basement of the Liberty Street Mercantile, opened May 27. On Sept. 12, the shop’s owner, Ryan Faraci, celebrated a new milestone by hosting the shop’s first concert. “It was the most incredible night of my life,” Faraci said. “I was very stressed leading up to it, hoping that people would show up. When we got a sizable audience, I was honestly a little overcome with emotion about how well it went. Easily one of the best nights of my life.” The shop offers a variety of vinyl records, with a focus on 1990s and 2000s nostalgia, Faraci said. Other music equipment, like turntables, speakers, and mixing boards, can be found alongside CDs and DVDs.

Liverpool, UK | Liverpool family-run record shop to be honoured with a blue plaque as the oldest in England: A Liverpool record shop is to be honoured with a blue plaque recognising it as the oldest independent record shop in England. The Musical Box in Tuebrook has become a much-loved part of the city’s music history, open for an amazing 78 years and run by four generations of the same family. It’s not only a well-known landmark in Liverpool, connections with the early days of The Beatles have helped the store’s reputation to spread and it regularly attracts customers from around the world. Now its legacy will be there for everyone to see, with a blue plaque to be unveiled on Saturday September 27 by Antiques Roadshow expert Wayne Colquhoun, who’s played his own part in The Musical Box’s story. Impressed by the huge amount of original archive material he saw on a visit to the shop in West Derby Road, it was Wayne who suggested that the family create a museum on the first floor to display some of the memorabilia.

Seoul, SK | The Kompakt Record Bar x Carhartt WIP Capsule Honors Seoul’s Hi-Fi Culture: Comprised of apparel, caps and a vinyl LP carrier bag. Carhartt WIP is teaming up with Seoul’s Kompakt Record Bar for a collaborative collection. The capsule, which drops September 19, highlights Seoul’s audio and hi-fi culture with a total of nine pieces and a short documentary. Leading the release is a black coach jacket with embroidered co-branding around the left pocket. The phrase “Work In Progress Every Damn Day” lands on the right chest, with logos of both Kompakt and Carhartt WIP taking over the entirety of the back. Gold-plated buttons and a zip enclosure add an elevated look. The same phrase lands on the front of the six-panel black cap, with Kompakt and Carhartt’s wave logo in blue embroidered on the left. Also joining the capsule are gray and black hoodies with chest and back branding, logo and illustrated T-shirts. Closing it out are a mini string bag in black and a vinyl LP carrier bag in brown.

Faces to Release New Archival Album Featuring Rare Tracks from Rod Stewart-Led Band’s First Recording Session: A new archival album featuring the earliest recordings by legendary British band Faces will be released on October 31. The 10-track collection, titled Early Steps, includes previously unheard tracks from the Rod Stewart-fronted group’s first-ever recording sessions at Olympic Studios in London in the autumn of 1969. The album also features 1969 recordings from Faces rehearsals at The Rolling Stones’ warehouse in the Bermondsey district of London. All of the tracks were pulled from cassette tapes from the Faces members’ own archives. Early Steps includes alternate and/or early versions of five songs featured on the Faces’ 1970 debut studio effort, First Step. Among them are “Shake, Shudder, Shiver,” “Devotion,” “Flying,” and “Stone.”

The World is My Oyster: Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Pleasuredome’ Goes Massive for New Box Set: …Though it’s already been exhaustively been reissued since The Second Disc started operating—once on a 2CD set from Salvo Music, on 2014’s vinyl/cassette/DVD set Inside the Pleasuredome (along with a 2018 Record Store Day box set of 12″ singles and the 2022 RSD comp Altered Reels, which brought a pair of cassette single presentations to vinyl)—another one (part of ZTT’s ongoing catalogue agreement with Universal Music Group) is coming in multiple formats on October 31. The jewel is a 7CD/Blu-ray box that will remaster the album, relevant single and B-side material and 35 unreleased tracks (including demos, BBC sessions and some outtakes); it’ll also include new stereo, surround and Atmos mixes of the album by Steven Wilson.

Paul McCartney To Release 7-Inch Vinyl of ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ For The Holidays: The new release is part of UMe’s annual holiday 7” color vinyl series, launched in 2024. With this year’s holiday season swiftly approaching, Paul McCartney has announced a new 7-inch vinyl edition of his seasonal hits “Wonderful Christmastime” and “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reggae.” Due out this November, the reissue comes in a special-edition Canary Yellow colorway. Recorded during the solo sessions for McCartney’s album McCartney II, “Wonderful Christmastime” was released as a single in November 1979, and later appeared on his band Wings’s final studio album Back To The Egg. At the time, it marked his first solo release in over eight years, following 1971’s “Eat At Home.” Over the decades it’s been covered by a vast array of contemporary artists, including Kylie Minogue, Diana Ross, Kelly Rowland, Mac Demarco, Hilary Duff and The Ready Set.

Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’ Is Getting A Holiday Rerelease on 7” Vinyl: UMe plans to release other Christmas classics in the same format. Last year, UMe celebrated the holidays with a selection on 7” vinyl. This year, they’re continuing the series, complete with a new snow white-colored 7” of Bing Crosby’s beloved “White Christmas.” The 2024 collection included pressings of The Beach Boys’ “Little Saint Nick,” Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” Ella Fitzgerald’s “Sleigh Ride,” Frank Sinatra’s “Jingle Bells,” and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song.” Each 7” features a beloved holiday hit on the A-side and another festive favorite on the B-side. “White Christmas” will come out as part of the 2025 lineup. It is set to be released on its own as well as part of a carrying case that will include the full lineup of 2024 and 2025 releases.
