TVD’s Eleven Weeks
of Vinyl Giveaways! Week 11… #7

…and it’s our very last Record Store Day 2011 giveaway.

It’s no mystery that every Record Store Day release is special unto itself. They’re rare, limited pressings, perhaps never to be rereleased on vinyl ever again. It’s the nature of the day itself—to celebrate the rarified existence of record stores themselves via the ol’ carrot and stick routine—if you press it, they will come. To record stores.

Our friends at Vanguard Records went deep into their vaults last year for a series of five reissues for Record Store Day 2010 that were met with such enthusiasm that this year they asked vinylistas (just made that one up) like you what records should see the reissued light of day for RSD2011.

And just as we did last year, we’ve got a complete set of all five for one of you to win—somehow, impossibly, made even more rare than what you’ll find at your local vinyl vendor tomorrow—if you’re lucky enough to come across these gems.

Follow us after the jump for the LPs in our final RSD2011 Vinyl Giveaway:

In addition to John Hammond’s “So Many Roads” at the top of this post which is newly re-mastered from the original tapes (a classic 1965 album featuring a stellar supporting cast including Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Mike Bloomfield, and Charlie Musselwhite) one winner will also receive:

Country Joe & the Fish, “Electric Music for the Mind and Body” Newly re-mastered, this classic 1967 album was dubbed by AllMusic “their most joyous and cohesive statement and one of the most important and enduring documents of the psychedelic era, the band’s swirl of distorted guitar and organ at its most inventive.”

Mississippi John Hurt, “The Immortal” Newly re-mastered from the original tapes, this classic 1967 album was dubbed “one of the best albums of country blues ever recorded” by AllMusic.

Skip James, “Today!” Newly re-mastered from the original tapes, this classic 1965 album ranks alongside the best of the period, with AllMusic declaring that James “might have made the best music of anyone who resurfaced during the mid-’60s… certainly, there weren’t many albums made during that time as good as this one.”

John Fahey, “Requia (and Other Compositions for Guitar Solo)” Newly re-mastered from the original tapes, this classic 1967 album stands as one of the most innovative “folk” recordings of the period, with the master guitar player exploring musique concrete and tape collage techniques alongside his signature blues derivations.

…but here’s the thing…all of the above titles? GONE already. Shipped. Out of the warehouse. None left.

What we do have for one winner however, are genuine test pressings of all five as shown below (and I’m told what you’re seeing top left there is merely a shadow on that sweet, sweet, vinyl.)

Certainly we’ve raised the bar on rarities with this one. Make your case as to why the five should find ownership on your shelves and the most convincing of the lot—wins the lot. We’ll give you a week to shake off the high that is Record Store Day and choose a winner one week from today, April 22.

Make ’em good and winners must have a mailing address in the US or Canada!
