TVD’s 9:30 Club July Concert Calendar Preview, Part II

You know the deal. We preview the 9:30 Club shows you should be checking out. You can enter later this month for a chance to win tickets to each of them.

…Perhaps even today? Or maybe… tomorrow?

Wanda Jackson and Imelda May, Tues 7/26

Whether you know The Queen of Rockabilly from her work since the ’50s and ’60s or just recently discovered her through her last couple of albums on Jack White’s Third Man RecordsWanda Jackson doesn’t need any introduction. She’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, dated Elvis, and has been touring for longer than many of her current fans have been alive. She swings by the club tomorrow with Irish rockabilly princess Imelda Mayso you Wanda Jackson fans maybe should check back here… soon. Very soon.

Eels w/ The Submarines, Wed 7/27

Lo-fi rockers Eels just kicked off their North American tour last week, and I had a late-’90s flashback or seven thinking about “Novocaine for the Soul,” y’know, the “before I sputter out” song that was played on repeat on DC101 back in the day. True Blood fans may also recognize “Fresh Blood” (“Sweet baby, I need fresh blood”—you can’t get much more apt than that), and their songs have been featured in a myriad of other movie and tv show soundtracks, including Six Feet Under, United States of Tara, Hot Fuzz, and American Beauty. Openers The Submarines though, might have one-upped them with the ultimate soundtrack score (pun intended)—inclusion in an iPhone commercial.

Sia w/ Oh Land and Ximena Sariñana, Thurs 7/28

Is it soundtrack day or what? Australian popstress Sia Furler, better know known simply as Sia, has had Top 10 hits overseas, but here in the US she may be best known for her contribution “My Love” to the third installment of the Twilight series soundtracks. While I prefer R-rated vampires, I was thrilled to also come across the factoid that she contributed backing vocals to Flight of the Conchords’ “You Don’t Have to Be a Prostitute.” She’s joined by Danish and Mexican pop stars Oh Land and Ximena Sariñana.

U.S. Royalty w/ Birdlips and True Womanhood, Fri 7/29

Local rock gets the spotlight this Friday, as U.S. Royalty takes the stage along with Charlottesville, VA’s Birdlips and DC’s own True Womanhood. I could talk about how they’re all soooo cuuuute and fashionable and how we always call them “local heroes,” but TVD readers already know that we love us some USR and True Womanhood, so come get out of the heat and support hometown music this Friday at the club!

Wanda Jackson fans… stand by.
