Weekend Shots!

It’s a gloomy day here in Southern California—hard to believe, I know—so what better to do than heat up some hot schnochocolate (Peppermint Schnapps and hot chocolate) and sort out my weekend itinerary? Obviously we cannot tackle all of these events, but I sure as hell am going to try.

9.7.12 | I love free things! I love record stores! Amoeba has a knack for combining these two loves. Pop in Los Angeles’ favorite record store this Friday around 6p to catch a free show from Terry Malts. The modern punky group (think Buzzcocks, The Clorox Girls, The Descendents, etc.) will be playing tracks from their debut album, Killing Time, out now on Slumberland Records.

If you can’t make it to Amoeba, The Terry Malts will be playing later that night at The Echo with The Fresh & Onlys.

9.8.12 | Revert to the ’70s with Echoes West, a psychedelic day festival over at the Echoplex. Personally thank Dead Meadow, Lords of Altamont, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Spindrift, Electric Flower Group, Wake Up Lucid (etc.) for this auditory acid trip. Prices for the 18+ event range from $15-$22, depending on when you buy your ticket, and doors open at 3p. Food trucks will also be present to fulfill those post-show munchies.

Want something a little less… trippy? Opt for Woody Allen’s witty and sexy 1979 film Manhattan, screening at Cinespia this Saturday as well. The bittersweet comedy features Mariel Hemingway, Diane Keaton, and Meryl Streep and, of course, Manhattan and is nothing short of perfect.

If you haven’t been to Cinespia screenings before, let me give you the run down; the group puts on a $10 movie night every Saturday throughout summer at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a grassy plot that hosts the bodies of Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, and other once Hollywood elite. Things kick off around 6:30 with a DJ set from Carlos Nino, followed by the movie at 8p. Grab your Cab. Sav., a blanket, and some brie and meet me there!

9.10.12 | Hello, Sunday Fun-Day! I somewhat have a ritual for my last day of the weekend, loosely consisting of: yoga, a trip to the farmers market, bottomless mimosas, and a rowdy show. Unfortunately, I have to work this Sunday night. Here’s where you come in… please, please, pretty please let me live vicariously through you by seeing Thee Oh Sees at The El Rey Theatre.

The Goldenvoice, LA Record, and Aquarium Drunkard presented show lined up Sic Alps, Mallard, and Zig Zags to open for the five-piece riot babes. So, wiggle into those form-fitting jeans that make your tush look oh-so-good, shove $23 in your pocket ($17 for the show, $6 for that much-deserved brewski), and head to the gorgeous El Rey. Tip: There is ALWAYS free parking in the residential neighborhood a block away.
