TVD Recommends: The Trio at the Maple Leaf Bar with all substitute musicians

Tonight’s gig will feature Terence Higgins on drums, Nigel Hall on keys and vocals and Calvin Turner on bass.

The Trio began as an improvisational project between drummer Johnny Vidacovich, bassist George Porter, Jr., and guitarist June Yamagishi. Since then it has evolved into an all-star concept with a lineup that fluctuates every week.

The only true constant has been Vidacovich. While Porter, Jr. plays a majority of the gigs, his many other projects demand his attention on occasion. However, this evening even Vidacovich has gone missing. He does have a good excuse—he is performing with Voice of the Wetlands Allstars in Connecticut.

Have no fear though. Tonight’s group will bring the funk. Higgins plays the skins in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Hall is associated with the Royal Family of musicians and is a member of Lettuce, which features members of Soulive.

Turner is the musician in the ensemble I am least familiar with. His resume includes work with Raphael Saadiq. Enough said.
