TVD Recommends: Parquet Courts at Morgan’s Pier, 7/24 (Free show!)

New York punks Parquet Courts visit one of Philly’s hottest bars for a free midweek concert.

Since the beginning of summer, local concert promoters R5 Productions have been hosting a series of free summer concerts every Wednesday at the beer garden along the Delaware River, Morgan’s Pier. Already they have brought in some great shows like We Were Promised Jetpacks, Mischief Brew, and Work Drugs.

This Wednesday they continue their hot streak by bringing the much buzzed-about four piece group Parquet Courts to town. Teaming up with them, a band from the other end of the musical spectrum, Woods.

The guys in Parquet Courts have been keeping themselves busy since the beginning of the year. Following the re-release of their debut album Light Up Gold and their numerous, must-see performances at SXSW, they have been tearing things up on the road. They have already played big name festivals such as the 4Knots Music Festival at New York’s South Street Seaport back in late June and more recently the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Later in October, they will travel back down to Austin for back to back weekends at the Austin City Limits Festival.

On top of touring, Parquet Courts are also working on the follow-up to Light Up Gold. Earlier this year they shared three new songs while taping their visit to World Cafe (the NPR program, not the venue.) While the studio recordings sound somewhat tame, Parquet Courts do not hold anything back when it comes to their live performances. The band has been making a name for themselves more for the highly energetic and electrifying stage shows while trekking across the country this summer.

Joining them for the free festivities are fellow New Yorkers, Woods. The folksy, psych group led by singer/guitarist Jeremy Earl bring a beautifully, laid back sound that will contrast with Parquet Court’s loud, abrasive style perfectly. Earl is also known as the man behind the Brooklyn based label, Woodist.

Doors for the show open at 9PM and music starts at 9:30PM. There are only a few free shows left at Morgan’s Pier so make sure to stop by before it’s too late. Also, the heat wave is finally over and there’s a great landscape with the mighty Ben Franklin Bridge looking over you while two great bands play. Oh, and did I mention it’s free?!

Morgan’s Pier is located at 221 N. Columbus Blvd. along the Delaware River in Philadelphia.
