The Cult. The week
at TVD. The ten city
ticket giveaway!

From our chat with Ian Astbury—Part One here and Part Two here—earlier this week:

…And is there a favorite song to play live?

My favorite song to play live, let me see. It’s interesting it kind of flips around. We get really excited to play the new songs. Recently we’ve been doing” Saints Are Down” from the Cult album from 1994 which I really like playing. It’s a really good song to perform live.

It’s seems like you guys really have a good time when you play “Electric Ocean.” It seems like a real energizing song to open the set?

“Electric Ocean” in that sense is very instantaneous and spontaneous. It’s a profound experience to walk on stage and perform. I’ve not known anything else, but again it’s trying to explain to somebody what’s it’s like to be a performer and go on stage. You just have to be there and walk through that threshold.

“For me, there is a transcendent theme. I go from the production room, to this environment—to the stage, it’s definitely a visceral shift. The energy with the cognition falls away and that’s what happens in a sense. You want to talk about mechanics of it, it becomes really about being connected.”

Connected, indeed. We have the opportunity for two of you to win one pair of tickets to any of these ten shows among The Cult’s current tour itinerary:

May 30, Denver, CO – Ogden Theatre
June 3, Pittsburgh, PA – Stage AE – Indoor Stage
June 12, Washington, D.C. – The Fillmore
June 13, Norfolk, VA – The Norva
June 15, Myrtle Beach, SC – House of Blues
June 16, Orlando, FL – House of Blues
June 17, Atlanta, GA – The Tabernacle
June 19, Houston, TX – House of Blues
June 20, Dallas, TX – House of Blues
June 22, Tempe, AZ – Marquee Theatre

Let us know in the comments to this post which city you’d like to see the band play live—and y’know, why (briefly)—and the most convincing of the bunch will win the pair of tickets. We’re choosing one winner per city, so make ’em good.

We’ll choose our 2 winners next Tuesday, 5/29 at noon, EST.

I would LOVE to see the Cult in Washington DC!  I would sell my own sanctuary in order to see them live!  Don’t make me have to do that!

  • TN

Like Jim Morrison saying an Indian spirit entered his soul and took over his body, I believe Jim’s spirit might have jumped into Ian Astbury’s  . Would love to witness Ian and the boys shaking our spirits at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Md.

  • Mix Master

Tempe AZ!  Because nobody but The Cult WHANGS it forever!

  • Bri

    June 12 in Washington, DC

Because I fell in love with The Cult when I was a mere six years old: my mother would blast The Cult in our little two-seater Mazda Miata with the top down, and we’d take long road trips across the Southwest, singing “She Sells Sanctuary” at the top of our lungs.

  • titans3693

I would love to see the Cult in Dallas Texas! She Sell’s Sactuary was one of the first song’s I learned on guitar. that song pretty much got me into rock music! Saw them a few years ago with my dad as a father’s day present, and would love to treat my dad again!

  • http://wwww.facebook.com/wulfmorris Cynewulf

I would like to hear them perform “White,” @ the Tabernacle in Atlanta GA.  I’ve been a huge fan of the Cult, for many years, “Electric,” & “Sonic Temple,” are my favorite albums by them…however, there’s something about the song “White,” that really strikes a chord with me.  The live version that they posted for download on their website awhile ago, was incredible.  I would really like to see them again…the last time I saw them, was back in ’89, when they opened for Metallica.

  • Lindac_collier

I would to see The Cult at the Tabernacle in Atlanta Ga, I have been a fan of The Cult since 1984…the songs have alway spoke to my soul, the new album Choice of Weapon is well already the most played tracks on my iPhone. Rock hard Cult your fans will always be here

  • StevenMendozaInfante

I Wanna see the Cult In San Diego this 26, I saw Them Last time and their rocked our heads with Duffy’s guitar!!!

  • Bren

I’d love to win tix for the Atlanta show.   Despite being a longtime fan, I’ve never seen them live.  I think it’s time that changes!

  • gary mccall

I love Sweet Soul Sister live and would love to win tickets to the Houston show.   They are a bad ass band, who’ll rock ya ass off.

  • Tom

Tempe, AZ! Lived in Vegas and we would drive to LA, just to find imports of all things Cult. Played Love nonstop for 2 years, Electric 2 years and Sonic temple 2 years. Oh, I did work in  record store at the time (85-90). Tried to put a CD, cassette or LP in the hands of every customer. those were the best years. Cult being a big part of that. the latest releases have been excellent as well. Finally saw them live in Phoenix january 1990. My ears happily bled from the sonic assault of Ian and crew. Just got a bunch of the reissues on CD, Still love em, always will. So glad to have them back. Would love to see them shred the stage once more.  Tom

  • Maidenfann

Would love to score tickets to the AZ show. My buddy turned me on to them and what a kick ass rock show. Loud as Hell, couldn’t hear for a few days! Would like to see them come back to The House of Blues in Anaheim, such a small club and great sound. Rock on!

  • JeffDuda

I want to see the Cult in Pittsburgh on June 3. I had tickets to see them in 1991 opening for Lenny Kravitz and our car overheated on Interstate 79. We hitched a ride to call a buddy to take us the rest of the way and instead he took us back to college. I never saw them and those tickets are still sitting at will call (spiritually, of course) at the now-destroyed Syria Mosque. I am owed a Cult show. Please.

  • wayne blair

I would love to see The Cult In Atlanta at the Tabernacle this year. I have been following the Cult since 1984. I haven’t missed seeing them since that tour, but this year may be tough for me. I am currently on the kidney transplant list and due to medical bills, my disposable income has almost dwindled away.

  • creature

I need tickets for the Pittsburgh show!  Me and my buddy went to see the Cult back in 1987-88 at a beautiful venue that has since been torn down, the Syria Mosque.  We went to the show as “staff” but once Ian came out on stage in his big buffalo hat, we took off our staff shirts and joined the crowd.  One of our shared all-time favorite bands.  The only bumper sticker ever on any of my cars was the Love album cover.  Me and my buddy are still friends and if we get the tickets, two deserving long-time fans will put those tickets to much appreciated good use.

  • codypierce2000

I am probably their BIGGEST fan! I would love to win tickets to the Houston show! I have seen them 6 times and they only get better with age! The new album ROCKS!!!!! Please pick me!

  • tim b

Would love to see The Cult in DC at the Fillmore….have been a fan since 1985…seen them about 8 times since then.  Best Band In The World!  In an era  of fake or pop bands, The Cult stands alone!

  • JeffMayfield

The first time I saw The Cult perform live, it was in Dallas, TX when the were touring in support of Sonic Temple (August 1989, opening for Metallica on the Justice tour).  I was working college radio and another radio guy from another college and I roadtripped about 9 hours to see them.  The most recent time I saw them was a couple of weeks ago at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis before Choice of Weapon came out. I would love to go see them again in Dallas now that the album is out and I have heard all the new stuff several times!

  • ScottMcCall

I would like to see The Cult in Myrtle beach, SC. I last saw The Cult in North Charleston, SC for the Born Into This tour about 4 or 5 years ago/ My Best friend and I drove all the way from Greensboro, NC for that show. About a 5 hour road trip, and it was worth all the trouble. I now live about 30 minutes from the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, and would LOVE  to see this show.  I already have the new album and I cant wait to  see some of those songs live, as well as the past great rockers.
    Thanks,
    Scott McCall

  • Lolatara

Jesus ……..typed out an awesome reason to see them in Atlanta and that’s what showed up…….exactly how my whole day has been!

  • MarkAM

I would like to win tickets to see The Cult in Orlando because I love the band as much as anyone around here. There’s a lot of great cities to choose from, but I think if I got to see them in Orlando I would also get to see some alligators. I think that’d be pretty cool.

  • IanAstbury

I’m going to tell you how big of a Cult fan I am. I first started listening to them in 1986 and have not stopped since. I traveled to Canada to see them in Toronto one time and have also seen them in Phoenix, AZ, NYC, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia multiple times.  One time my friends and I bought tickets to see them at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown, PA.  They were the opening act for Metallica.  We paid Metallica ticket prices to drive up there see the Cult open (Billy’s amp cut out on American Horse and they had to fix the amp mid song) and then as soon as they were done we left.  Yup. I paid for Metallica tickets and never did see Metallica that night.  I’d like 2 tickets to the Tempe, AZ show so I can donate them to my friend Brian who is just as huge a Cult fan as me so he can see them as he lives in Phoenix.  Nothing like hearing them play Phoenix in Phoenix by the way!

    • mandypc

       @IanAstbury

2 tickets for the Denver show, please! I’ve been a Cult fan ever since my freshman year in college (1987) when my dorm roommate introduced me to Love.

  • JumpinJ

I would like tickets to the Orlando show PLEASE!! I have been a fan since the Southern Death Cult days, waited outside the Beacon Theater in NYC in 1985 after The Cult’s “Love” album show just to see Ian exit the stage door, and if I could only listen to one song the rest of my life it would be “Rain”!!!

    • bdtex

       @JumpinJ Love the “Rain” video.

  • TJLeyva

any chance I can get some LOVE for the Fillmore Concert in SF this weekend. Big fan! Favorite song is Bonebag!

  • Poppygirl

The reason I ever opened my mouth to sing…I owe to Ian and The Cult.
    Orlando please:)

  • Pigman

Dallas- Like most I have been a fan since Dreamtime. Ian inspired me with a comment he made when he was asked by an Canadian Indian “What are you doing to give back?” Since then I volunteer well over 200 hours each year. The Cult are not just a musical influence but a life influence.

  • illuminated

Road trip to Pittsburgh from Ian’s old neck of the woods(Hamilton Ontario area). This band changed my life when I was at a grade 9 (1991)high school video dance. The video of She Sells Sanctuary caught my eye. It was at that moment, when I realized there was more to music than just “rockin out”. Indeed music holds so much more. I remember asking a fellow student “Hey do you know who this is?” The guy turned around pointing at his Ceremony  t-shirt, “The Cult! I’ll bring you some tapes tomorrow”. Favorite artist since that moment.  How can you not dig a band that has never sold out, and continues to be trailblazers for up and coming artists around the world for almost 30 years now? The Cult…helped guide me to my own sanctuary….

  • jrutkowski

Houston would be full circle sort of speak for me. I’m from Houston and the Cult has been my favorite band since ’86. I have long since moved to Missouri for my career and have recently faced a near fatal health issue. Your music was with me before, during and now a new album to help me celebrate my road back to the land of the healthy. A trip to my home town would be the ultimate celebration. Keep the music coming.

  • DeeDeeOCallaghan

Washington DC!  I’m an unemployed, broke, desperate rock’n’roll fan who has never seen the Cult!!!!!  My kids are grown, I’m free to be the rock’n’roller I used to be…my youngest is graduating from high school on the 9th and nothing would be better than to celebrate my freedom at a Cult concert on the 12th!

  • Jay

Tempe, AZ.  That is where I initially discovered The Cult’s music while I was going to Arizona State University.  Saw several shows back in the day in Phoenix, one very memorable gig when Lenny Kravitz opened the show.  I’m not too wild anymore, but I would love to kick it back up a few notches for the night . . .  .

  • bdtex

    Houston please.

  • bdtex

Houston,Texas. The House Of Blues is a great venue for The Cult live. First saw The Cult live in Houston 10-12 years ago at the Verizon Wireless Theater. I believe I’ve seen them 4 times since then and they just keep getting better. Every road trip I take,I load High Octane Cult into my cd player and crank it up. My favorite cd.

  • ShawnMartin

Tempe, AZ – because they’re totally skipping the Pacific Northwest this go-round so I’ll need to hop on a plane – and AZ is the closest. If I get to go I’m really hoping they play “Wilderness Now” – one of the most incredible songs I’ve ever heard.

  • ChrisFHester

I was in the Army stationed in West Germany. Yes boys and girls there was a time before the wall came down, Germany was divided into East and West. It was 1987 that I was first turned on to the divine sounds of The Cult. As a soldier it’s one of two things why you can’t see a concert. 1. You’re broke. 2. You’re deployed. Besides back in the day it was all word of mouth no internet. I wouldn’t say I didn’t have my chances to see the Cult over the years. It’s just over the past couple OF years I have really become informed about The Cult’s overall body of work and relationship with their fan’s. I joined Sacred Soul in 2011 an online ezine page and was amazed at the zeal of how personally attached the fan’s are too The Cult. I believe that when Ian Astbury and the rest of the members of the Cult say that they have love in their heart they mean it. I have never seen The Cult live but have seen them many times in concert on You Tube. I know it’s not the same. It does however give a sense though of how fanatical the fans are. I would really like like to see The Cult in Atlanta GA at The Tabernacle. It’s would be an almost religious experience if you chose me. So please pick me I am their number one fan. Chris F Hester @Linda Van Oostrum, @Mauricio Ramírez Grimaldo are also super fans of The Cult

  • Magdalaine

Washington DC please!!  The cult is such a great group. I have loved their music for a long time and now so does my daughters! Ian’s voice is soo sexy it would be awesome to be able to hear it in person. Thanks!!

  • http://spoolgoinground.wordpress.com/ Spool Going Round

The last time I saw The Cult was when they opened for Billy Idol.  The details are a bit hazy. My wife and I used to do scissor kicks into the air when “She Sells Sanctuary” would come on. It would be nice to try that again.  Just bought the new album and it is AWESOME! We would love to go to the Chicago show on 6/1.

  • Jammie35

I have had 2 chances to see The Cult. I was denied both times because I was under 18 years old and the show was 18 and up! Now that I am of age, I am planning on driving 4 hours to catch their Atlanta, GA show on the 17th. It would be pretty cool to win the tickets. Even better if I got to meet the band. It would be something I can mark off my bucket list. Going skydiving on the 2nd for my 35th and seeing The Cult!

  • CultChild

Being a “fan” doesn’t even describe how I feel about The Cult. I am one of the “pure votaries” that Ian talked about when he said that The Cult doesn’t have fans, they have addicts! The Cult is my “desert island band” (If I could have only one cd for the rest of my life on a desert island, it would be one of theirs). Which one?…Now that I would have difficulty narrowing down! I do have a special place in my heart for the 1994 album, however, as that was the first time I’d heard them (I was in middle school at the time). “Joy” was the very first song my brother played for me. I remember it like it was yesterday. How many bands (or songs for that matter) can you remember exactly when you first heard them? The Cult has made that kind of impression on me, from the very beginning. I love that Ian mentioned “Saints Are Down” as one song that he particularly enjoys performing live! It’s awesome that they are playing that one at shows lately; I would be so grateful for tickets to see them play “Saints Are Down” in Myrtle Beach! 😉

  • gratefulshroom

I’d love to see The Cult in Tempe, Arizona!!! My first show was the ‘Sonic Temple’ tour in 1990 at Stadium Arena, Grand Rapids, Michigan!!! Then i had to wait 19 years to see them again here in Phoenix for the ;Love Live’ tour at Celebrity Theatre in 2009!!! I had a ticket to see the ‘Black Sheep’ tour, but it got cancelled at the Orbit Room in GR, MI in 1995. The New Album Rocks ‘Choice Of Weapons’ !!! THE CULT ROCK!!!!!!

  • Howard Baum

I’ll be travelling to Orlando from Miami for The Cult either way, but free tix would be tremendous!  I have seen The Cult in numerous cities, numerous times per tour, since 2001, not to mention the 80s & 90s, and Ian solo. One of the very few bands I’d go out of my way to see.
I scheduled a trip to New Orleans around them, and almost got beat up by a drunken Englishman in Orlando for them. My girlfriend and I had to leave our spots by the stage in ’91 (West Palm) when someone pulled a knife on me, & she only forgave me when I brought her to her to Ft. Laud. in 2001. They were our band, and they are still my band!
I’m into Buddhism and whenever the Cult comes around, I remember who I am again. The Cult is not only the soundtrack to my glory days gone by, but also my current glory days. The apex of cool, for all the right reasons.
I assure you that I’m not a loon, and hopefully no longer a violence-magnet. A bigger, more appreciative fan you will not find…
    Thank you very much!

My sister has not been able to work and was diagnosed with MS recently. She lives in Florida and I would love the chance to see her and give her the tickets. Ever since the girl I was dating back in ’85 turned me on to the band, I remained caught up in their hard rockin’ sound. She is no longer in my life, but the band has always been there – pumping me up before going out, working out or just when I need to be picked up. For me it started with the Love album and I love the new stuff too. I haven’t been to many concerts and finally after 25 years, I got to see them for the first time when they played the Tempe Music Festival last year. There were other great bands there, but my headliner was The Cult! Whether I win tickets or not, I will be at the Tempe, AZ show and appreciate their hard work and the opportunity to pass along my thoughts.

In college my best friend/roommate would play “Wild Flower” all the time. Now when I hear it, it reminds me of those carefree days, parties, living and loving life to it’s fullest. I still think of her as Wild Flower 23 years later. Can’t wait to see the band of her namesake. 🙂
