TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Michael Kiwanuka,
“I’m Getting Ready” 7″

As we asked this past June when we had some tickets to give away to see Mr. K—are you guys following TVD’s Idelic Hour, our weekly podcast series which arrives at the tail end of every week? Host Jon Sidel was onto Michael Kiwanuka well over a year ago. In fact, MK held the Idelic Single of the Week spot.

It’s sweet acoustic soul/R&B with spirit and swagger with a voice of conviction. But you needn’t believe me. John Mayer recently noted on his Tumblr, “Just saw [Michael Kiwanuka] play a song called “I’m Getting Ready” on David Letterman tonight. I was dumbfounded. What a voice. What a song. What a vibe. What a soul…”

To suitably convince you, we’ve got the 7″ single from his debut LP, Home Again, released only this week, to put in the hands of one of you.

How to win the 7″ single, you ask?

As mentioned, Sidel turned me onto Michael a year or more ago. Simply tell us in the comments a similar tale of being tipped off to a great act way before their time in the spotlight, and the most ahead of the curve response will find the 7″ in his or her (North American!) mailbox.

We’ll choose one winner a week from today, 7/27!

I saw Norah Jones sit in with Charlie Hunter  at a show in a small club in Iowa City, Iowa in 2001. When he brought her out to play piano and sing on a couple of songs he mentioned that his labelmate (Blue Note) had a new album coming out soon and we should all check her out. She was stunningly captivating from the start.

Since MK has already been taken, =) my ahead of curve was Ben Howard. Hopefully you didn’t just ask, “Ben who?” If so, fix that quick and YouTube the genius. I’ve been listening to BH before he was signed. I stumbled across his music online and fell in love. I’ve been hooked ever since. Looking forward to finally seeing him live when he comes to the U.S. this fall.

I got on the Modest Mouse tip when I was a little kid.  My mom had This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and gave it to me when I was 10. I jumped headfirst into Building Something Out of Nothing, Lonesome Crowded West, and even The Fruit That Ate Itself.  Shortly after my 17th birthday, “Float On” came out.  Although songs like “Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset” and “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes” had burned a place in my heart, I couldn’t stomach watching the Real World and hearing the band that defined my adolescence play out a clip of the drunk guy calling the drunk girl a slut.
