We Are Scientists:
The TVD First Date

“The great thing about vinyl is that you can eat off of it.”

“None of these modern formats—mp3, flac, wav—can offer that. Even cassettes, which had many merits, were difficult to eat off of, and CDs were basically only good as coasters. Nah, gimme ten or twelve inches of vinyl with my dinner, please.

There’s also the problem of EMPs, which nobody is talking about. An EMP, or electromagnetic pulse, can easily wipe your entire music collection off your hard drive. A large enough EMP—one generated by a massive solar event, let’s say—could wipe ALL the music off of ALL the hard drives (say goodbye to your “cloud!”)

In fact, a really powerful EMP, like the ones used by bad guys in lots of movies these days, would clear an audio cassette’s data, too. (I think.) Can’t do sh*t to a vinyl record, though.

What’s a magnetic force going to do to songs that are physically engraved in vinyl?

What about CDs, you ask? Eh… I don’t know. I know they’re not magnetic, but you still have to wonder how they’d hold up to a really top-notch EMP. My confidence isn’t high.”

We Are Scientists’ LP TV en Français is out on March 4th on limited edition vinyl. (Bon appétit!)
