TVD Premiere:
Darling Black,
“It Wasn’t Supposed
to be Like This” EP

PHOTO: GODLIS | “I’ve had a yearning to write and record some tracks that were just totally my own,” Dylan Hundley of Darling Black tells us from her NYC home base. As one half of musical duo Lulu Lewis with bandmate and husband Pablo Martin, she’s found yet another creative voice which we’re delighted to be premiering here today.

“I love what we make as Lulu Lewis and that is the combination of me and Pablo together. As an artist, I believe it’s important to stretch and create in your own private world as well and express all that needs to come out. I needed a place to be messy (Lulu is not messy at all) and embrace my darker, no wave, LES heart.

I grew up in New York and these sensibilities run through my veins very deeply. I kind of kicked it off over the summer when I was getting ready to do a live stream for a Johnny Thunders birthday show. I covered “In Cold Blood” for that and was recording the vocals to rehearse at home. I had just gotten an Arturia Micro Brut analog synth and threw that on the track for fun and it kind of morphed into what sounded like a mash up between Johnny Thunders and Suicide which I really dug. That informed the other tracks musically, and then lyrically I chose to write from a more personal place. I expect to keep at this and balance between both of the projects.”

Darling Black’s debut EP “It Wasn’t Supposed to be Like This” arrives in stores tomorrow via Ilegalia Records.
