Monofonus Press Drops 7″s, Hosts Harsh Realm 2

Monofonus Press describes itself as “an Austin-based record label + multimedia organization. Specializing in the physical and digital distribution of music, literature, and visual art, we aim to share the work born from the manic obsessions of Austin’s most influential and anomalous producers.” I can describe them in one word: superbadass.

Their nonstop flow of (superbadass) releases continues unabated with two new 7 -inch singles hitting the shelves this week. The first one, the “shit split,” as I like to call it, features extreme noise terror from Austin by way of London’s Shit and Shine (featuring Craig Clouse of Hammerhead, TODD, and Crown Roast fame) and Austin’s free-noize progenitors Expensive Shit (who also appear on the just-released Casual Victim Pile II compilation).

The 7″ release party is Tuesday, March 15, at Trailer Space. It’s free, all ages, and BYOB. Here’s the schedge:

7:00 Hubble
7:45 Expensive Shit
8:30 Shit and Shine
9:15 Vaz

Next Saturday, March 19, Monofonus Press is having their unofficial SXSW shindigMonofonus: Harsh Realm 2 – with another stellar lineup to be held at the Monofonus Compound, 610 Vermont Rd. The artist featured on the other MP 7″ dropping this week – Sun Araw – kicks off this party. Their Houston Abstros EP features tripped-out space funk far removed from the noise blasts of the shit split, but still somehow a complementary companion piece. I’m especially digging the cover of the Teenage Fanclub cut “December” on the B-side.

Harsh Realm 2 lineup:

1pm Sun Araw
2pm Blank Realm
2:30pm Umberto
3pm Expensive Shit and Shine
3:30pm M. Geddes Gengras
4pm White Hills
4:30pm Warm Climate
5pm Woodsman
5:30pm The Myrrh
6pm Soft Healer
6:30pm Daniel Francis Doyle
7pm Cloudland Canyon
7:30pm John Wesley Coleman
8pm Ralph White/Tim Kerr
