Cookies: The Vinyl District First Date

“When I was little my mom thought I was a genius.

I’d pick out records and lay the platters down on the plastic turntable. She assumed I was reading the actual words with my soft baby brain. Preparations were made for private tutors, applications drawn up for the gifted program.

But it turns out that I’m horribly dyslexic and had just memorized the different labels, the colors and shapes – a classic trick amongst my kind. She had some Stevie Wonder and Carole King in a cabinet, which I’d paw through. But my thing was Sesame Street, especially the hit single “One Way.”

Vinyl is magic. Even without speakers, there’s a private concert playing right through the needle. It’s visceral and fragile and heavy. It takes up all your bookshelves. The plan with Cookies, before there was a name or a song, was to put a single out on 10″ vinyl.

Cookies – Boycrazy

Getting that first test pressing in the mail and plopping it down on the (no longer plastic) turntable is one of the nicest experiences in the world.”
