TVD Ticket Giveaway: Gary Clark Jr. at the
9:30 Club, 11/9

Austin native Gary Clark Jr. was 12-years-old when he got his first guitar. Since then, the now 28-year-old has become well-known for his seemingly innate ability to mix an eclectic combination of genres, including blues, jazz, rock, funk, and soul.

Clark has garnered a devout fan following during his years in the music scene, with many people even dubbing him “the savior of blues.” Clark has also attracted the support of many fellow musicians, including Damian Marley, Citizen Cope, Sheryl Crow, and Eric Clapton, who chose Clark as the only newcomer to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2010.

Blak and Blue, Clark’s first full-length album, comes out on Warner Bros. on October 23rd. The album will be Clark’s first release with new material since The Bright Lights EP, a two song, four track EP that Rolling Stone deemed “richer than most full-length records.”

Coinciding with Clark’s forthcoming release is the Blak and Blue tour, which will be stopping in Washington, DC on Friday, November 9th. Tickets for Clark’s show at the 9:30 Club went on sale today, but we have a pair that we want to give to one TVD reader.

Want to see Clark when he comes through town? For your chance to win, comment below and tell us your favorite EP.

I’m going to go with the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.

A winner will be chosen at noon on Monday, September 24th.

Super Furry Animals - Ice Hockey Hair EP

All the songs are good, but the title track is my favorite song by my favorite band, and I've always loved how it's not on a full length LP. I think the EP format is a really cool way to release experiments or collaborations that aren't necessarily made to be on a full album, and it's unfortunate that it's a dying thing these days.

Definitely One Day As A Lion's self-titled EP, if for no other reason than because at the moment it ended, I knew Zach de la Rocha would be back with RATM...

Blood Bank - EP, by Bon Iver.

I hated Bon Iver when I first heard them. All wispy nothingness — a different sound for the sake of being different. But that changed with Blood Bank.

The songs -- especially Blood Bank -- somehow hit that perfect combination of aesthetic beauty, novelty, familiarity, and lyrical meaning.

I might have been a sucker at the time because I fell in love with Katlyn. It was winter 2009. She was weird in all the right ways -- a masterful pipe-cleaner animal maker -- beautiful. Loved every kind of music I did and more.

It's a simple image, but the lines "You said ain't it just like the present/to be showing up like this./As the moon waned to crescent/we started to kiss" make me think instantly of Katlyn. And feel the quiet joy straining in the song.

Gary's joy is much louder, but we've bonded over that too. Rocked out to Bright Lights way too loud and earned a few wall-knocks from our row-house neighbors.

I'd love to share his show with her, and connect the dots on two spectacular EPs marking our time together.
