TVD Recommends: Harvest the Music
in Lafayette Square, tonight, 10/17

The penultimate presentation of the fall series which raises money for the Second Harvesters Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana takes place this afternoon at Lafayette Square featuring the North Mississippi Allstars and the Young Pinstripe Brass Band. The performance begins at 5 PM.

The North Mississippi Allstars burst on the scene with a youthful take on the music of the Mississippi hill country south of Memphis. Though they are no longer youngsters, they still bring the energy of preconscious teenagers to a set of searing electric blues.

Two brothers, Luther and Cody on guitar and drums respectively, the sons of legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson, form the core of the band. But bassist Chris Chew is no slouch either.

This evening they are joined by two friends that mine the same deep musical vein—Alvin Youngblood Hart and Lightnin’ Malcom.

The Young Pinstripe are the latest in a long line of New Orleans brass bands that descend from a legendary band. These youngsters have been tearing it up at second line parades, most recently for this writer at the Young Men Olympian, Jr.’s annual throwdown at the end of September.
