The wry singer/songwriter who plays ukulele and guitar and fronts the band, the Hons, will be appearing for a Happy Hour gig beginning tomorrow, June 22, and continuing through July 27.

Bates promises original music, pop covers, and lopsided love songs. His band mates in the Hons will appear on June 29 and July 27.

Of special interest to fans of musicians who occasionally perform with tongue firmly in cheek are his ukulele versions of songs by Britney Spears, Guns ‘n’ Roses, and Louis Prima.

The Hons’ release To Skyward was acclaimed by OffBeat magazine as “the album Weezer wishes they could make…” Since I don’t know Weezer’s music, I will throw out “Alex McMurray with a power pop sensibility,” if you require a stylistic comparison.

Or as Bates puts it, “The album serves as the Hons’ tribute to classic rock: guitars, B3, and drums actually derived of seven microphones, a kit, and a largely un-quantized drummer.”
