TVD Recommends: OFF! at Siberia, 8/10

The hardcore punk supergroup will come kicking and screaming into New Orleans for a one-night only show at Siberia. Drummer Dale Crover of the Melvins will join them.

Crover is an interesting addition, with a gift for spot-on hardcore timing and power. He also once famously turned down a request from Kurt Cobain to be Nirvana’s drummer (The Melvins were one of Cobain’s favorite bands and the two often played together in the Pacific Northwest punk scene).

OFF! is composed of Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris on vocals, Burning Brides front man Dmitri Coats on guitar and Red Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald.

Crover will be filling in for the band’s usual drummer Mario Rubalca of Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes. For punk fans throughout the city, this is a legendary line-up that is not to be missed.

Morris and Coats got together to form OFF! in late 2009 when Coats approached Morris to resurrect Circle Jerks with a new album he wanted to produce. Coates and the rest of the band didn’t jive and the record fell apart.

Out of the dust of that project, Morris and Coates (who had gotten along) decided to write some songs and put together their own band. They released their first album First Four EPs in 2010 and made their live debut that same year at the 2010 SXSW Festival.

They are currently touring in support of their most recent album Wasted Years. The album, while not as strong as the band’s earlier releases, does deliver a solid performance of passionate, purposeful hardcore. It’s got a no-frills, take it or leave it (basically punk) attitude, that will leave fans satisfied.

Gay Kiss, Bad Antics, and CLASSHOLE will be opening for OFF! The show starts at 10 and will be preceded by DJ Matty’s Happy Hour at 6. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here.
