TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Thin Lizzy, (s/t) Debut Reissue

I was way too excited when I heard about this reissue from the phenomenal Light In The Attic Records! So excited that I hooked up a copy for one of you cats. It’s the great Thin Lizzy debut album from way back in 1971, known also of course as the first in the triumvirate of albums from the Eric Bell era.

Lizzy would later become known for their twin-guitar, or dual-lead, sound. You know, the way the two guitars sound in unison on “The Boys Are Back In Town.” Well, the first three Lizzy albums had only one guitarist, the great Eric Bell.

A little info on Bell from Wikipedia: “…the pressures of recording, touring and the excesses of the rock star lifestyle began to take their toll. He left the band after a New Year’s Eve concert in 1973, after throwing his guitar into the air in the middle of the concert, pushing the amplifiers into the audience and storming off stage.

He stated later that he had no regrets about leaving: “I really had to leave because of ill-health. It was exhaustion, and the majority of things that were available to me… I couldn’t really handle it.”

So yeah, now’s your chance to win this killer Thin Lizzy 1971 debut album vinyl reissue package from TVD and Light in the Attic Records. But wait, let me tell you more about it!

Mine is definitely Jailbreak, which is not only a great song, but also interesting since Bell sings “tonight there’s gonna be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town”.  Really, “somewhere?”  I can’t imagine where this jailbreak is going to take place– at the jail perhaps?

Ah, yes before they dumbed down to reach arena rock audiences. Here we find Messrs Bell, Lynott and Downey fusing folk and rock in a very intimate manner.  The true Thin Lizzy if you will.

Never did like like the “twin guitar” attack (with the exception of John Sykes). Compared to early Lizzy, the later material lacked that earthy charm and depth.

Bravo to Light In The Attack for reissuing this album. This is Lizzy when their character shined as a charming trio. Bring on Vagabonds of the Western World next!
