Me And My Drummer: The TVD First Date

“I was raised in the ’80s and ’90s by two people, who are true music addicts.”

“Both my parents were radio hosts and musicians, so our house was always stuffed with instruments, CDs, and vinyl. The place where I taught myself piano when I was little was my mother’s vinyl storage room. Sometimes, I would leave the piano chair and go through all those dusty records, pull some of them out and gaze at cryptic, sketched 70s folk band’s artwork and super bright 80s images with the strangest combinations of grey, violet, and yellow. Many of these bands that were traded as hot insider tips at the time, you’d never hear of again post 1985.

Vinyl seemed to be quite fragile objects. My Mum had to clean them, before she played them, she always encouraged me to treat them very carefully and this was actually one of the few times, when she acted like a “strict Mother.” I always thought “there must be something to this vinyl thing.”

When I became an adolescent, I suddenly gained a whole new perspective, especially for the records my parents had recorded themselves. My Dad looked so cool on the black and white cover-photo, showing off his muscles, topless in some backstage room, almost like a snapshot, as if the photographer just caught him while warming up with his drumsticks.

I started to talk with my parents about the differences between vinyl and CDs and my mother made a point when she said, “There’s just much more space for everything on vinyl—more images, more details, more sound, more effort. It’s just more…”

Now, that I make music on my own, I experienced the advantages of vinyl first hand. I bought myself a record player and whenever some band really strikes me, I get the album on vinyl and decorate the room with my favorite covers. I don’t want to become dogmatic though, and I still listen to MP3s often.

But whenever I want to indulge myself in something flashy, I make a really sumptuous dinner and eat it while my favorite record spins.”
