TVD Live: Me And My Drummer at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, London, 10/25

Berlin based duo Me And My Drummer have spent 2012 releasing some fantastic singles (namely “You’re A Runner” and “Heavy Weight”) on the run up to their debut album release The Hawk, The Beak, The Prey. Their most recent single, “Don’t Be So Hot,” displayed a more intricate side to the band, away from the more uptempo tunes, and it’s unclear how the band’s many shades will go down tonight.

Hoxton is notorious for being a hipster area in London and it’s no surprise that the bar is packed to the rafters with them tonight. The venue itself it tucked away at the back with a surprisingly large stage. Can Me And My Drummer fill it tonight? The simple answer is, yes, yes they can and they do it with style.

Charlotte Brandi’s voice is nothing short of impressive. She flits between lilting tones on softer tracks like “Phobia” and the aforementioned “Don’t Be So Hot” to epic and mesmerising vocals on “Rain Kids” as she sings “Don’t try to ignore me, I’m everywhere in the room.” There’s no danger of that tonight.

Drummer Matze Pröllochs’ provides a solid backbone and a real edge to the band who, if paired with any other, would be in danger of sounding like just another average indie, electro-pop band. They are perfect together and create a beautiful sonic symmetry on stage.

Their champion moment of the night is “Heavy Weight.” Arms are flailing, people are dancing, and they dizzy the crowd into an electro-induced trance. These two are definitely ones to watch for 2013. Their album is an alt-pop masterpiece but live, Me And My Drummer’s beguiling, melodic symbiosis is truly addictive.
