TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

The middle of summer always carries a certain type of stress I like to call “the summer lazies.” It’s when my body starts slowing down for vacation while my “to-do list” is still incomplete.

By day’s end, a voice in my head is often calling me away from work and towards my backyard and a cold beer. All though my party days are long gone, that “little voice” still flashes “LGFW”!

This week’s playlist was also marked by the tragic passing of Amy Winehouse.

My wife and many of our friends went to the screening of Patty Schemel’s documentary Hit So Hard. There was a ton of Facebook chatter and comparisons to Amy’s death at 27 to that of Kurt, Jimi, and Janis. So, in my typical twisted Idelic fashion, I’d like to dedicate this Idelic Hour to Amy and all of us who may have gotten wasted just one too many fucking times.

It’s a fun set and I’m too lazy to write more—so have a beer!

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Vanessa Carlton’s Rabbits on the Run

UPDATE 7/29: Due to what is literally an overwhelming response, we’ve found a 3rd copy of Rabbits… to add to the giveaway. We’ll now have 3 winners, not just 2…

As we mentioned this morning, Vanessa Carlton’s brand new LP Rabbits on the Run lands on store shelves TODAY, 7/26, and as always make good on our promises, Vanessa’s given us two copies of the LP to give away to two of you.

“Rabbits on the Run,” [Vanessa’s] fourth studio album, sweetly rescues her career and stands as validation of her singer / songwriter skills.” the New York Post wrote yesterday.

“The 10 songs on the album highlight her ability to make ethereal, Enya-like tracks that get close enough to pop for radio spins. With her lyrics, Carlton, 30, shows herself to be a thinking woman — influenced, she’s said, by the scientific writings of physicist Stephen Hawking and the pastoral children’s classic “Watership Down,” from which the CD borrows its bunny title.”

Album opener “Carousel,” a piano ballad layered with bright, jangly bell accents and hand-clapped beats, is the record’s top tune, with words that say life is cyclical. The album’s other standout is “Dear California,” in which Carlton really flexes her pop muscles with a hook-filled sayonara to the Left Coast that could have been borrowed from the Sheryl Crow songbook.

Enter to win by letting us know in the comments to this post why one of the two copies of “Rabbits on the Run” should be yours, and we’ll award the two most convincing responses the brand new record. We’ll choose our winners at noon on Monday, 8/1.

Dex Romweber Duo
Fly Under the Radar
with New Release

One new release flying under the radar this week is The Dex Romweber Duo’s LP, Is That You in the Blue?

Available on Bloodshot Records, the new record is another fine document in a series of releases from Dex Romweber (dating even back to his days with The Flat Duo Jets) dedicated to exploring classic American musical forms, namely country, blues, rockabilly, R& B, and surf. The opening cut, “Jungle Drums,” is typical Romweber, punk-fast rockabilly and his roaring vocals, while his sister Sara adds tremendous pace and energy with her drumming.

The Weekend Shots!

There are three noteworthy shows this weekend that are free—unfortunately two are at the same time.

Tonight, Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes play at Tipitina’s as part of the Foundation Free Fridays series. I went last Friday to hear the Honey Island Swamp Band and I truly enjoyed the mixed crowd. There were people of all ages. There were fans of the band and there were some folks who just wanted to go to Tipitina’s on a Friday night. By the end of the show, I think the HISBEEs generated some new fans as well. I expect the same this evening.

The Lineup: The Sultana, Minivan Blues Band, Bob Dylan w/ Leon Russell

I like to juxtapose things that are polar opposites, because it amuses me. Like pulling up next to really fancy cars in my piece-of-crap Honda and revving the engine. Or being really loud in a waiting room full of silence. Or sneaking up to one of the many beautiful women I creep out in bars on a weekly basis by standing next to them and saying nothing.

Scratch that last part. Anyway, that’s my theme this week. Something old, and something new(ish) in a similar vein.

Show of the Week:
The Rocketboys at
The Hi-Tone, 8/1

Start your August off right with a healthy dose of melodic (and a little ambient) indie rock. The Rocketboys are making their oft Memphis appearance at The Hi-Tone this Monday, August 1st alongside our very own Jeremy Stanfill.

The Rocketboys are from Austin but have strong ties to Memphis (lead singer Brandon Kinder is originally from our fair town). The band seems to have been on a little hiatus of sorts lately, but hopefully there’s more music in the works. Check out this live video of their song from their second live DVD Live At Antone’s after the jump…..

Vanessa Carlton,
what’s in your record collection?

Vanessa Carlton’s brand new LP Rabbits on the Run hit store shelves on Tuesday, 7/26, but all this week we’re going through Vanessa’s personal record collection with her recs for the recs you should have in yours.

We’re closing the week with . . . Christmas in July?

Anne Murray – Christmas Album | This is an odd choice for a few reasons: one, I’m a Jew who is super into Christmas songs and two, Anne Murray is an austere and straightforward singer . . . a style that I’m not usually into.

I think I love how clean and melancholy she sounds. The snow and holiday didn’t make sense unless this record was on.

Meiko at
The Hotel Cafe, 8/24

I’m letting you all plan ahead for this one! I just found out the lovely Meiko – with her distinctly introspective voice and catchy melody lines – will be returning to Hotel Cafe on August 24th.

When listening to her music, the first thing you hear is this beautiful, original voice. It is this combination between sweet and soulful, raspy and smooth. The simultaneously soothing and catchy melodies then sweep you away into the wonderfully detailed and relateable story-telling of her lyrics.

The Sound of Memphis: Alex Warble on the IFC’s Young, Broke and Beautiful

Check out this preview from episode 5 of the Independent Film Channels’ Young Broke and Beautiful. It features local musician and artist Alex Warble from the band The Warble. We invited the band to record an Ardent Session a few years ago which really surprised a few people around the studios.

Their truly original and undefinable musical style have confused and intrigued the local scene for many years. But the recording became a favorite around the studio and was often quoted and referred to by the engineers – that band, or Alex, is never boring, and they both continue to make a deep impact on Memphis both visually and audibly.

The Warble is playing a free show at Shangri-la Records Tomorrow.

Stream the band’s new album Movie Night.

TVD Live: Wanda Jackson with Imelda May at 9:30 Club, 7/26

Last Tuesday night at 9:30 Club was like a trip back in time to an alternate reality. Wanda Jackson and Imelda May brought the spotlight back to the ’50s—at least for the evening. They took us on a cross-generational ride, DeLorean style, to the roots of rock and roll music: rockabilly. And it was a damn good time.

Imelda May, who opened up for Ms. Jackson, is a Dublin-born throwback to the heyday of rockabilly. She had an edge more intimidating than a six-blade knife. With her four-piece band, May commanded the stage with feline intensity. She switched guitar for tambourines, tambourines for bodhrán and back to guitar. Her jazzy vocals set the crowd on fire and the band, well, they played hard like dirty kids in a sandbox.

It was hard to tell if any of them were breaking a sweat on stage. Al Gare, the upright bassist, looked as if he was tangoing with it. He plucked the instrument with a joyful fury and then slapped over and over to delight of the 9:30 crowd. The drummer, Steve Rushton, almost brought me to my knees. He tore through his kit like a caged animal. His solo was so good, it sounded as if he created chords through a stream of bass, snare, and hi-hat rhythms. And, yes, there was a guy playing salt-shakers—Dave Priseman—who would trade them in for hard-bopping flugel sets.

Ms. May had us hoopin’ and hollerin’ for the last few songs, and it just got even wilder in there. She got us geared up between songs when did her shout-out to “Wanda Jackson!” By that time—with Gare’s buzz haircut, Priseman’s shrugged salt-shaking gestures and Imelda May’s curlicue hairdo—we could’ve been extras in a Dick Tracy reboot.

When Wanda Jackson came onto center stage, the allure of the raucous band diminished. But not in a bad way: the Queen had entered the building!
