Charles Hammond Jr.:
The TVD First Date

“Vinyl has been and always will be a major presence in the Hammond household.”

“Stemming from my childhood, the sounds of ’60s/’70s soul and rock were heard on a daily basis, thanks to Charles Hammond Sr. (my dad) whose musical favorites I naturally took on as my own. Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathway, Al Green, The Isley Brothers, Santana, Joe Cocker, Three Dog Night, The Stylistics, EWF (Earth, Wind, & Fire), and Tower of Power (just to name a few) maintained a regular presence on my dad’s BSR 2540W. It is to his credit that to this day I can’t do a live show without including at least a song or two from this era.

As his vinyl collection began to find its way into our basement storage crates, so did I. Despite the fact that I did not come from a typical musical family, it was absorbing the sounds heard on these records that served as my musical foundation.

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

An astrologer once told me upon reading my “chart,” I would spend much of my life roaming alone at night. For me it was never a secret, the night has always been a friend.

These past months, on many a night, I have driven LA boulevards listening to the making of a record—an extraordinary album by Sean Rowe, an artist I work with. Last week Sean debuted a single from this very special release. The song “Bring Back The Night” is a calling, and the muse for this week’s Idelic Hour.

It’s a fact that all the great songwriters have at least one “cut” about the night. Thank you Sean for bringing back these “nights” for me. I’m not sure what your song title means but when I was checking up on some of the songs for this week’s playlist, I stumbled on this quote for the song “Nightfall” by The Incredible String Band:

“The hangman is death and the beautiful daughter is what comes after. Or you might say that the hangman is the past twenty years of our life and the beautiful daughter is now, what we are able to do after all these years. Or you can make up your own meaning – your interpretation is probably just as good as ours.”

I love this.

By the way, Sean Rowe’s album is called The Salesman and The Shark. I wonder what that means?

Tresors:
The TVD Interview

For the better part of the last fifteen years, France has become one the most influential exporters of electronic pop music. Ranging from the groundbreaking (Daft Punk, Air), the shamelessly careerist and poppy (David Guetta), to the iconoclastic (Justice, Sebastian Tellier, the Ed Banger label). Thankfully, the nation’s rising international profile has resulted in underground musicians getting some love as well.

Trésors is a Paris-based duo comprising two men named Adrien (Durand and Kanter, respectively). Since their formation at the end of 2010, the two have been crafting experimental music with a strong pop twist. The result is danceable music that’s challenging without being needlessly unlistenable. Adrien and Adrien have performed across Europe with the likes of Suuns, Puro Instinct, and Teengirl Fantasy. They are currently mixing a record in beautiful Baltimore, MD, and I had the pleasure of interviewing them.

How long have you known each other?

Adrien Kanter: For about five years now. We were in different bands but involved in the same scene.

Adrien Durand: We shared a lot of stages before playing music together. But I don’t remember our really first meeting, maybe AK does! In a club in Paris, I guess.

You’re both named Adrien. How does that work when someone wants to address one of you when you’re both in the same room?

AD: I don’t know how but it always works. Tibo, our soundguy, calls us “Monsieur D” and “Monsieur K” though.

AK: Yes, it needs a bit of training but we’re starting to be good at guessing. You have to listen to the way people say it, rather than to the word itself.

Weekend Shots!

Gig-wise, it’s a pretty quiet weekend here in D.C., but fear not, good times will still be had by all. The venues are abound with the standard, but never routine, DJs and movie screenings, plus some not-so-standard burlesque shows and air guitar competitions.

Friday (6/22) get up offa that thing and boogie to the Black Cat for Sandwich of Soul, where DJ Soul Call Paul will have you shimmying to your favorite sixties soul jams by James Brown, Tina Turner, and Stevie Wonder. This week’s Red Fridays at U Street Music Hall starts pumping at 10 p.m. with Timmy Regisford and Chris Burns, but come earlier at 7 p.m. for Boston-based soul singer Eli “Paperboy” Reed and openers Lily & The Parlour Tricks.

Prefer to do the rocking yourself? Friday, the 9:30 club is hosting D.C. regional competition of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships. Yes, that’s right — air guitar.

Weekend Shots

If your woman steps out with another man, that’s the breaks. If she runs off with him to Japan, that’s the breaks. If this past week has you feeling the breaks of life, no worries—The Vinyl District is here to cure your blues with a list of great live music to see in Memphis… and one very special surprise!

Friday (6/22) will start the weekend off on a very pleasant note. Norah Jones is the singer/songwriter who penned that song that the smart quiet girl who helped you out in Calculus loved so much. Not only that, she’s sold 40 million records. The piano crooner will be taking the stage at the lovely space that is the Mud Island Ampitheatre. Having released her fifth album, Little Broken Hearts, earlier in the year, Jones has enough material to keep you swaying back and forth all night. Also, this’ll score HUGE brownie points with any lady with class, so buy two tickets and grab a date who likes to talk of the modern application of Kant for a fun insightful evening.

Over in Midtown, another great locale is paired with another fantastic performer when Trombone virtuoso Glen David Andrews will take the Stage at the Levitt Shell Pavilion Pavillion. The New Orleans native is full of musical voodoo, providing a damn good show for anyone that likes to boogie.

Weekend Shots!

Whew. We’ve made it through another week, Cleveland. It was a sweltering one, but thankfully, the air conditioning kept us going. At least until we see our utility bills, right? Regardless, it’s time to get out there and take the edge off. Luckily for you, Cleveland’s serving you up a busy weekend filled with lots of great music!

Where will you catch us this weekend in Cleveland? Well, we’ll be at the Grog Shop for Japandroids, of course. With or without the vowels, Japandroids (JPNDRDS) is a two-piece band that’s going to deliver you the sound of a five-piece. File them into the garage rock genre, if you have to, but acknowledge that this band calls their sound “post-nothing”. They’ve also got a killer album out by that name. They’re on tour now in support of Celebration Rock, the hard-hitting follow-up to 2009’s Post-Nothing.

If you’re looking for some excitement and you want to see if two guys can put out enough sound to deliver it, get yourself to the Grog Shop, too. If this isn’t your sound, Cleveland’s got plenty of other shows to hit up this weekend. Go out, have fun & remember to tip your bartenders!

Moon Block Party Founder Phil Pirrone: The TVD Interview

This Saturday, June 23 marks the all day music affair that is the Moon Block Party in Pomona!

I’ve had the honor of playing one of the Moon Block Party concert series myself with my Starlight Band (at the Desert Daze fest in Desert Hot Springs) and can only say that festival-mastermind Phil Pirrone knows how to make one magical event.

Just look at all the space, eyes, and tye-dye in the flyer below! AND it’s free and all ages! I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the Wizard of Oz himself.

Hi Phil! How are you? Can you talk about the line-up and what you have cooking for Moon Block Party Pomona?

I’m doing well. Thanks.

Last year’s event had what I like to call the best bands you’ve never heard of, but this year, we have some pretty great bands that you HAVE heard of! Fool’s Gold, The Entrance Band, Sleepy Sun, Crystal Antlers, Allah-Las, Electric Flower Group and more.

Fool’s Gold, fresh off the road with Red Hot Chili Peppers are tighter than ever. Sleepy Sun just finished a new record with Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age). Electric Flower Group is a new band featuring Imaad Wasif and Secret Machine’s drummer, Josh Garza. I’m pretty excited for all 35 bands, which also includes Matt Baldwin, ex-Zwan/A Perfect Circle/current Entrance Band bassist Paz Lenchantin’s debut solo performance, Death Hymn Number 9, Cosmonauts, and my favorite band, Dahga Bloom.

Weekend Shots!

Free Fridays continue at one local club, an offshoot band that some think is better than the main group and an important benefit.

Tipitina’s is helping young people who may be a little tight on cash during the slow, slow summer with their Foundation Free Fridays series. Tonight, Flow Tribe is the headliner. I have written about them before, so suffice it to say they one of TVD’s favs.

The opening act is Daria and the Hip Drops, though not as well known yet, this band is one to watch for sure. I saw them at TVD’s favorite record store, the Louisiana Music Factory, and was quite impressed.

Daria plays the steel pan; an instrument not commonly seen in these parts. Her band plays original music that is influenced by a wide variety of genres including reggae. She did an e-interview some time back that you can read here.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: The Mynabirds, Generals

Maybe I’m just a sucker for a woman who writes songs about historical people and events with political undertones, but this is one vinyl giveaway that I’m particularly excited about.

We’re giving away a copy of the brand new album Generals from The Mynabirds that was released not but a few weeks ago—and it can be all yours!

Inspired by photographer Richard Avedon’s portrait The Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Mynabirds’ Generals follows a constant theme of what it means to live and breathe revolution, whether internally or in the literal sense. There are explorations of what it means to be a daughter in “Wolf Mother,” what it means to be American in “Karma Debt,” and simply what it means to be a revolutionary, as in the title track.

Somehow or another, Laura Burhenn was able to reference Sartre for a pop chorus in “Body of Work,” as a nod to the existentialist idea that “freedom is what you do with what has been done to you.” In part, Generals is a not only a concept album, but a protest against fighting, lethargy, and above all, apathy.

The Mynabirds: The New Revolutionists Week at TVD

In tandem with the release of The Mynabirds’ brand new LP Generals, front woman Laura Burhenn has embarked on an ambitious portrait project entitled “The New Revolutionists,” the purpose of which is to “pay tribute to the vast web of women who do various types of important work: artists, community organizers, doctors, mothers, women who embrace their lives and work to help and empower those around them. It is an awareness campaign for non-profits, women and works of art that empower.”

The week we’re turning TVD over to Laura to delve a bit deeper into the lives and inspirations of five of the many revolutionary American women the project serves to spotlight who are making a difference in their own communities across America. —Ed.

“I met Nicole (aka Nico) Childrey and Rebecca Marie Miller separately, but around the same time — approximately 2004 or 2005, I’d say. Nicole was playing drums in a New York-based band called Come Down; they were playing on a stage at ARTOMATIC. I met Rebecca in the bathroom before her old band (Brave the Day) and my old solo band shared a stage in Baltimore at a venue that has since closed; as we changed into our dresses and boots and applied eyeliner in the mirror together, I knew we were gonna be friends for life. Same with Nico after I’d spent some quality time with her. Sometimes you just know.

Anyway, as we all traversed through various bands and tours and big life moments, our paths crossed again and again. And now I’m so incredibly proud to call them both bandmates in the Mynabirds. They are both ridiculously talented musicians — Nico plays so tight in the pocket, it feels like perfectly worn-in jeans that fit your soul to a T (if that makes sense); Rebecca’s voice is one of my favorite in the world, her solo songs will make you weak in the knees.

But besides that, they’re bold and kind-hearted ladies who are hilarious, generous, adventurous, and somehow still pretty easy-going despite the trials and tribulations of tour life. When they’re not on the road with the ‘birds, they’re busy ladies: Nicole is a freelance music journalist and runs the website East Nashville, With Love; Rebecca is busy working on a solo record and contributes to so many other bands as well. I thought it’d be fun to turn to questions on them, let you get to know them both a little better. Here goes…”

Backspin: Rediscovering Medicine

L.A.’s answer to the U.K. shoegaze craze of the early ’90s was Medicine. While perhaps best remembered by some as the band who appeared onscreen in The Crow, they deserve to be celebrated for their music: a mélange of danceable pop songs smothered in sheets of ear-splitting guitars.

Brad Laner served time in numerous punk and new wave bands like Debt of Nature and Steaming Coils before a three-year stint playing drums for Savage Republic. He formed Medicine in 1991 after running his guitar into a cassette 4-track recorder, amplifying the distorted signal, and realizing he had struck upon a unique sound.

Captured Tracks has reprinted the first two Medicine albums as part of their Shoegaze Archives series. Shot Forth Self Living (1992) and The Buried Life (1993) are both available as double LP sets with attractive gatefold sleeves. Also included are CD booklets and download codes for the digital files. Both albums have a fourth side containing bonus tracks; in addition, each comes with a 19-track companion album filled with demos and alternate mixes.

TVD Recommends: Helen Gillet’s Wazozo Zorchestra, tonight, 6/22

The newly renovated Circle Bar is the setting tonight for one of the most interesting projects to come out the fertile musical mind of cellist and singer Helen Gillet. The group performs at 10 PM.

The Wazozo Zorchestra evolved out of Gillet’s all-string small group Wazozo, which focuses on her interest in French chansons. These ditties, which are sung by Gillet in French, evolved out of a centuries-old tradition. She incorporates modern tunes by well-known French artists like Jacques Brel and Édith Piaf in the group’s repertoire.

While Wazozo includes only stringed instruments, the playfully named Zorchestra features clarinetist Christopher Kohl of the Hot Club of New Orleans, sousaphonist Jon Gross and drummer Doug Garrison.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Alexandra and
The Starlight Band 7″
and Signed Poster!

Hello everyone, Alexandra Starlight here with a special giveaway of my record which is released …today!

As you all know, I poured a lot of blood, sweat, and glitter into each and every vinyl disc that I’m releasing today. After raising all of the funds via Kickstarter (and then some!) I was able to produce the record of my technicolor dreams: a clear vinyl 7″, embedded with tons of multi-prismatic rainbow glitter.

Because each and every record had different colors of glitter sprinkled into it by hand, they are each unique, kinda like glam rock snowflakes! I’m sure Elton and Ziggy would approve.
