TVD Ticket Giveaway: The Hives with Ex Hex at the 9:30 Club, 12/10

Let’s face it, more often than not, you can look at the obscure compilation of words in a band’s name and wonder how and why it decided to call itself that. Cymbals Eat Guitars, Deadboy and the Elephant, or the ever-parodied Panic! At the Disco or Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, anyone? Yet if there is one band whose name makes perfect sense, it’s The Hives. Consider them in terms of mild discomfort and bouts of hot flashes, and you’re pretty spot-on.

Nearly a decade into their career, the Hives became one of the trendiest bands of the 2000s. Since releasing their sophomore LP, Veni Vidi Vicious, the Swedish garage rock revivalists have gained international acclaim for their scrappy sound and super-charged live sets. Known for their arty black and white attire and outrageous energy, the quintet is still hailed as one of the best live acts in rock ‘n’ roll more than 20 years after their birth.

Their name pretty much says it all. Frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist leads a riotous performance, easily paralleled by the high-octane energy of his bandmates: guitarists Nicholaus Arson and Vigilante Carlstroem, bassist Dr. Matt Desctruction, and percussionist Chris Dangerous. Pelle is known for his brash idiocy—and scissorkicks—often pre-empted by his notoriously rather self-righteous declarations. Still, the guy’s got the charm and stamina to back up his arrogance, providing for nothing short of an electrifying performance.

TVD Recommends:
G-Flux/Electric Cowbell Record Release Party at Saint-Ex, 11/19

Space cumbia: What is it, you wonder. Just ask DC-based producer G-Flux.

Born in Mexico City, Gustavo Naranjo a.k.a G-Flux didn’t move to the States until 2008, when around the time that synth-infused “nu-cumbia” began trending across the globe. It was then that Naranjo began working with up-and-coming Latin American artists to cultivate a sound both futuristic in its electronic stylings and traditional in its ties to Latin roots music.

Since his production of “El Cicion Del Caribe,” a collaboration with popular cumbia duo Afrodita, G-Flux has become one of the most celebrated artists of the nu-cumbia genre.

He has worked with both national and international artists including Chet Samuel, Boogat, and Karen Bernod, to produce a sound that pushes the boundaries of the category’s conventions.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Josh Ritter at the Lincoln Theatre, 3/1

Amid the auto-tuned voices and synthetics pervading popular music, Josh Ritter is the kind of performer who reminds you that celebrated musicians are real people too. Not in the sense that we remember they’re thinking, feeling beings like the rest of us—we know that much—but in the sense that Ritter is the kind of performer whose refreshing humility so easily allows the rest of us to identify with him, whose genuine, non-gimmicky presence is somehow so wonderfully normal.

Though Ritter has been recording for more than 14 years now, he remains true to his boyish Americana charm, even after a decade of international acclaim. Honest and unpretentious, the folk artist sings at times with an arresting sweetness, at times with raw intensity—but always with striking sincerity. Since his 1999 self-titled debut, Ritter has recorded five additional full-length albums, the latest of which is just as charming as ever.

After releasing The Beast in Its Tracks in March, Ritter is rounding out the year and kick-starting 2014 with an international acoustic tour. The master of folk recently added a second night to his stopover in DC early next year, and (you can thank us later) we’re giving away two tickets before they even go on sale.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Lily & Madeleine (s/t) Prize Pack

Who knew that when singer-songwriter duo Lily & Madeleine published their first YouTube video last year, their performance would gain over 300,000 views. The sisters are only teenagers, after all.

But listen to the soulful maturity with which they sing, and you’d swear these young women have been recording for years. It’s no wonder that just one year later the two are releasing a gorgeous full-length album—out just today (10/29) on Asthmatic Kitty Records—and are well on their way to taking the music world by storm.

Despite their adolescence, the duo—that is, Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz, ages 16 and 19 respectively—perform with a wisdom beyond their young years. Madeleine’s folkier, almost angelic voice in tandem with Lily’s edgier, more sultry tones yield harmony which could only so seamlessly come from two artists who’ve known each other their whole lives. The result is an effortlessly congruent sound marked by striking simplicity, delicate instrumentation—and raw talent.

City Bird Publicity and TVD Present CMJ 2013

Five nonstop days of music. More than 1,400 live performances. In over 80 venues. It’s that time of year: New York City’s annual CMJ Music Marathon. This year, City Bird Publicity and The Vinyl District are thrilled to present a must-see day party at the event, featuring up-and-coming bands Sharkmuffin, Indyns, Bedfellows (USA), and Elephant 12.

The showcase takes place on Saturday, October 19th, the last day of the festival’s 220-hour stream of live music throughout NYC. Guests need no badge to attend the show, scheduled for 2-5 pm at Brooklyn’s super-chill, railroad-themed Passenger Bar.

The lineup features four bands definitely worth knowing: one of “Brooklyn’s Best Bands,” garage pop group Sharkmuffin; post-punk and electronic trio Bedfellows (USA), another of Brooklyn’s own; Indyns, an NYC-based rock band with a sound marked by chilling synths and vocals; and London’s three-piece electro punk/rap band Elephant 12.

TVD Live: Austin City Limits, Weekend Two, Good Vibes Despite Nature’s Shortcomings

PHOTOS: SHANTEL MITCHELL | There’s no denying that the South is home to some of the best music festivals in the country: Bonnaroo, Voodoo Fest, and Jazz Fest, to name several. But there’s nothing quite like listening to some of your favorite bands and discovering new artists in the Live Music Capital of the World.

The past two weekends were host to Austinites’ favorite/least favorite time of year: Austin City Limits Music Festival. The festival boasts some of the few days out of the year when people have a viable excuse to get weird in the city where keeping it weird is a mainstream way of life, when wearing neon paint on your face is socially acceptable, and when artists ranging from FIDLAR to Wild Belle, Muse to Smith Westerns, and Jimmy Eat World to Thao & the Get Down Stay Down are all performing in one place—and in this case, on one day nonetheless. How any festival-goer can retain sanity is beyond me. But then again, losing it a little is kind of part of the ACL experience.

This year, over 130 bands performed on eight stages at Zilker Park, ACL’s annual grounds for the past 12 years. And with a diverse lineup featuring everything from pop to metal to folk and hip-hop, the festival no doubt drew a motley crew of attendants—a mishmash of Austin’s trendy, vintage-clad youth, fratty college students ready to fist pump all night long, “cool dads” who hang up the suits to relive their glory days, kids who are clearly up to no good in those cheeky hot pants, and uber-hippies who look like they’ve read Thoreau one too many times. Needless to say, ACL is absolutely an experience all its own.

Wildewoman: A Sound Uniquely “Lucius”

It’s impossible not to tap your toes and sway your shoulders to Lucius’ infectious “Turn It Around.” From the very first “ahhh-ha!” and the syncopated handclaps that follow, I’m hooked. Playful, fun—I like it. And then, the chorus sets in, and what originally sounds like a catchy, airy pop song reveals to be much richer, much more magnetic than your typical bubbly tune, thanks to the vocal finesse of its leading ladies.

Enter Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe, the power behind Lucius’ soulful, multi-layered sound. The duo have been performing together ever since their college days at Berklee–for nearly a decade now. Listen to the perfect unison and gorgeous harmony with which they sing, and their longstanding experience is pretty evident. The fact is no secret to many onlookers as of late. Just ask Rolling Stone, who recently highlighted Lucius as an esteemed “Band to Watch.”

Now, the group is making waves across the music sphere with news of a new album. The first time I heard “Turn It Around” was when I came across the band’s EP earlier this year. Now, it takes new form as one of 11 tracks on the band’s debut LP, Wildewoman, released today, October 15, via Mom + Pop Records.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (OST, red vinyl)

It’s here, folks. After more than three years since its original release, the soundtrack for Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is now available on vinyl. Note: whether you’re a fan of the film or not, this thoughtfully curated collection is definitely worth a listen.

Based off Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series, Scott Pilgrim could have fallen prey to the all too common tragedy of the comic-book-turned-movie with a soundtrack chock full of cheap-ploy chart-toppers, but void of music that actually makes sense for the film. Thankfully, though, it doesn’t.

Seeing as though O’Malley’s novel essentially centers on the garage punk music of its characters, Wright faced the challenge of curating a collection of sounds that accurately reflects Scott’s world—and easily stood up to the test with this compilation. The soundtrack channels the comic’s scrappy energy by enlisting the talents of Beck, who wrote and composed the music for Scott’s band “Sex Bob-omb,” and features the music of Metric, Broken Social Scene, Rolling Stones, T. Rex, and others. Also rightfully included in the list is punk-pop quartet Plumtree, whose “Scott Pilgrim” inspired O’Malley’s original character.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Atoms for Peace at the Patriot Center, 9/30

Rarely does the term “supergroup” conjure images of longstanding success in the rock world. But then, only one of them is lead by Thom Yorke.

In 2009, a few years after releasing his first solo album, Radiohead’s front man began collaborating on a side project with producer Nigel Godrich and Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Later joined by drummer Joey Waronker (of Beck and R.E.M.) and percussionist Mauro Refosco (of Forro in the Dark), the band gave its first performance in L.A. before it even had a name.

Luckily, the anonymous lineup has since established a name for itself—and possibly redefined the idea of the supergroup, once described as a “potent but short-lived rock phenomenon.” After making its official debut at Coachella in 2010, Atoms for Peace toured briefly around the U.S. and finished its first album in 2012. The product was Amok, a psychedelic set of digitally-manipulated jam sessions that easily rivals the groove-worthiness of Yorke’s prior endeavors.
