To help celebrate the 5th anniversary of Record Store Day and TVD’s own 5 year milestone, we’re spreading the love with 10 weeks of vinyl giveaways in anticipation of Record Store Day 2012, which arrives on April 21st this year. Week 2 of our 10 Weeks of Record Store Day Vinyl Giveaway is now upon us, and once again we have your chance to win a great new release.

Dr. Dog will be bringing their meticulously crafted harmonies and unmistakable, indie meets classic rock sound to a venue in your neighborhood next month, but before you check them out live, we’ve got your chance to win a copy of their highly anticipated new album, Be The Void, released February 7th on Anti Records.

The psychedelic rockers’ newest release is their strongest effort yet, with NPR raving, “the previous Dr. Dog records have their pleasantly grabby moments. But sometime in the past few years, Dr. Dog has grown into a hook-writing machine. The band’s new record has a bunch of refrains that register as sledgehammers to the brain.”

TVD Recommends: Farewell Republic,
A Benefit Concert for
DC Vote at DC9, 2/23

On Thursday, February 23rd, the Monument Music and Arts Festival will host a fundraiser concert at DC9 featuring Farewell Republic and Heads on Sticks in support of DC Vote.

Monument Music and Arts Festival is a forward-thinking charitable organization that empowers musicians and their fans to impact positive social change through philanthropy and activism. Over the past two years, Monument has raised awareness and financial support for a wide variety of DC-based non-profit organizations.

All of the proceeds from tomorrow’s show will go to DC Vote, a local organization dedicated to securing full democracy and full voting representation for the residents of the District of Columbia. As the recognized leader of the DC voting rights movement, DC Vote advocates for enactment of critical voting rights legislation, educates Americans across the nation about DC’s status, works to prevent congressional interference in DC’s local democracy, and serves as a resource to elected officials, the media, and the public.

Stream Dot Hacker’s New Self-Titled EP

Before joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2009, Josh Klinghoffer formed Dot Hacker, an experimental rock band based out of Los Angeles, California.

The group, which features Klinghoffer on guitar and lead vocals, is made up of fellow established musicians, including Clint Walsh, Eric Gardner and Jonathan Hischke. Collectively, the members of Dot Hacker have a history of touring and recording with the likes of Beck, Gnarls Barkley, PJ Harvey, Broken Bells, and the Butthole Surfers.

TVD’s 9:30 Club February Concert Preview

While the sudden temperature spurt would make it seem otherwise (almost 70 degrees in the middle of the winter season?!), the month of February is now upon us.

For those who find themselves without a Valentine this year, worry not—there is still plenty to love about February, including the free tickets The Vinyl District will be giving away to each of these upcoming shows at the 9:30 Club!

Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards will be taking the stage in support her newest release, Voyageur. Having written the album while in the midst of a divorce, the honesty and emotion found within each song is undeniable, with the Vancouver Sun saying the Bon Iver-produced album “very bluntly – and poetically, and hauntingly” describes the dissolution of her relationship. If the looming Valentine’s Day holiday has you feeling down about your own love life, instead of drowning your sorrows in vodka, check out a powerful female musician performing poignant material when Edwards comes to the District. If you’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’, perhaps you should stay tuned to TVD… later today?!
