CAN’s The Lost Tapes
to be issued on vinyl

Oh yeah, lovers of legendary Krautrockers CAN were hoping for this one. The amazing treasure trove of previously-unreleased delights known as The Lost Tapes was released on CD and digital this year by MUTE/Spoon records, but most CAN fans were hoping for a proper vinyl release. Because of the overwhelming demand, The Lost Tapes will be released as a 5 LP box set on 180g vinyl on December 4th.

“The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore and edited by Jono Podmore. The vinyl issue of The Lost Tapes will come with a 24” square poster and a 28 page booklet with sleeve notes by Irmin Schmidt and Ian Harrison.

Lost Tapes were discovered when the legendary CAN studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum. The new owners sentimentally preserved everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau.

TVD Recommends:
The Orwells at CMJ,
10/16-10/20

We know how tough it can be to decide which shows to see at CMJ. Sometimes the band you really want to check out is playing on the other side of town – but you’re three drinks into a bar tab, two long city blocks from the subway, and fresh out of cash for a cab ride.

Luckily, Chicago’s The Orwells are playing five shows this week, so you will have multiple opportunities to catch their fuzzy, tuneful garage rock.

The band is currently working on the follow-up to this year’s Remember When, trying to finish high school, and plotting a move to Los Angeles. Bask in the soft glow of the Internet as you watch the following clip, then check out the full itinerary below for The Orwells in NYC!

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Say Anything at
The Paramount, 10/20

Los Angeles rockers, Say Anything recently launched the “Anarchy Fall Tour” which pulls into New York’s Paramount next weekend (10/20) for what will be a full night of anthemic sing-a-longs and pop-punk sneer.

There is no shortage of energy and excitement at Say Anything’s shows and Anarchy, My Dear, the band’s most recent release from March, 2012 is a favorite among the band’s rabid cult following. Having seen the band about six times now, it is clear that singer Max Bemis allows his lyrics to do the talking, running through the band’s most popular tracks, but leaving time to hit upon some hidden gems.

Fan of the band? Lucky for you, we have a pair of tickets to give away to one winner!

Dig this new tune
from Foxygen

I love these dudes. Foxygen‘s Jonathan Rado and Sam France are two of the most interesting songwriting cats I’ve heard in the last few years. Jagjaguwar released their self-produced masterpiece Take the Kids Off Broadway earlier this year and now they’re set to release their new Richard Swift-produced album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, in January.

Check out Foxygen’s story to catch up: “In May 2011, Foxygen’s Sam France and Jonathan Rado nervously handed off a CD-R of their homemade mini-opus Take the Kids Off Broadway to producer and visionary Richard Swift after his performance in a Lower East Side club.

The duo, who had just mixed and burned the disc that very night, had been devotees of Swift’s outsider-pop oeuvre since high school, when they first began recording their own pubescent forays into oddball rock n’ roll (at least a dozen records were finished before they graduated high school).

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Helvetia,
Nothing in Rambling

Hey, I just heard a great new album. And I scored an extra one for one of you! The band’s name is Helvetia (not Helvetica, like I kept reading at first) and here’s their deal…

“The stripped down experimental psych of Helvetia plays out like a series of sun-faded snapshots: subtle, stark, hazy and gritty as hell. Since their 2006 debut, Helvetia (pronounced HEL_VE_TZIA) have created a myriad of recordings, each dripping with various levels of experimentalism. Now on their 7th album, the band has signed with Joyful Noise, and has produced their most focused and inspired tracks in their 6-year history.”

Originating in Seattle WA, and currently residing in Portland OR, Helvetia began in the aftermath of the droning, atmospheric group Duster (Up Records). Principle songwriter Jason Albertini and bandmate Canaan Dove Amber formed the group with a revolving cast of contributors, which at times has included members of Built To Spill and Dinosaur Jr. Albertini’s laissez-faire approach to personnel has resulted in a diverse catalog of material, ranging from 4-track lo-fi indie to surreal, unhinged soundscapes.

TVD Live Shots:
Band of Horses at
House of Vans, 9/18

There are few things better (in my opinion) than seeing Band of Horses in a full (but not packed) open warehouse with the rain drizzling and a slight chill in the air. That just seems like the perfect weather and listening conditions for one of my favorite bands of all time. Not to mention, this incredible show was held on the release day of their newest album, Mirage Rock.

For a band that has and will be playing festivals to tens of thousands of people, including this Saturday’s Global Fest (featuring Foo Fighters and Neil Young), Band of Horses put on just as an energetic performance as any time I’ve seen them, playing in front of 500 or 5,000.

What Band of Horses did though, that I find extremely refreshing, is what I believe most bands should do. Nowadays, it seems that bands play (either) a bunch of old/new songs, and then change the pace by asking the audience if it’s “okay to play a couple old/new ones”; obviously the crowd chants and says it’s okay. Band of Horses, however, played one song from the first album, followers by another song from another album, followed by another song from a different album, and so on. This made the band’s set unpredictable, and for me, even more captivating.

The 2012 Light in the Attic Road Trip

The fantastic folks at Light in the Attic Records are in the midst of their annual Light In The Attic Road Trip, hitting 58 record stores in 10 days and covering 3,000 miles from Seattle to Los Angeles and back.

Each day they post video highlights and the first two episodes just went live, along with a contest to win a seat in the van and $50 a day to spend on wax. Here are the latest two episodes.

Now for those of us on the East Coast who are unable to join the contest to win a seat in the van, well here’s something pretty damn cool! Head to the official Light In The Attic Facebook page and leave a comment on the cover photo telling LITA about your favorite record shop (make sure to tag the store, if you can) and you’ll be entered to win one of three $50 gift certificates to LightInTheAttic.net! The winners will be announced on Friday, October 5th, on LITA’s Facebook page.

TVD Live Shots: Circa Survive, Touche Amore, at Terminal 5, 9/14

Terminal 5 seemed like quite the place to be on Saturday, September 14th when Circa Survive, Touche Amore, Balance and Composure and O’Brother made their way into New York City.

Although I’m not the biggest hardcore fan in the world, I was pleasantly surprised by all bands and the musicality they all brought with them. Standouts for the show definitely were Touche Amore and headliners, Circa Survive.

I have to admit that my favorite part of hardcore shows is that the majority of songs are under two minutes. Although this makes my job as a photographer a bit difficult as I’m only given three songs to photograph out of each set, this makes my job as a music listener easier. I find myself quickly zoning out of the music after 2 minutes, but with the short, sweet tracks that Touché Amore played (“The Great Repetition” and “Art Official”), I was fully engaged their entire set.

TVD Live: Green Day
at Irving Plaza, 9/15

Over the weekend, revolutionary pop-punk rockers Green Day hosted an intimate, sold-out show at NYC’s famed Irving Plaza—the venue they first headlined back in 1994. The nearly 5 hour event presented by Nokia and AT&T featured fans of veteran and new age status, alongside the industry’s elite.

Opening the night was up and coming punk band, Lipstick Homicide. This young–average age of 17– female fronted trio entertained the early entry VIPs with their highly saturated bass-punk riffs.

Just after 10 PM, Green Day took to the stage and were well received by a packed house. Opening their 30+ song set list with “Welcome To Paradise” off of their ’94 release, Dookie, fans across the generations showed their appreciation.

Those unable to attend this auspicious event were treated to an live broadcast of the first few songs–allowing the band to connect with fans far and away.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Sensations’ Fix,
Music Is Painting in
the Air (1974-1977)

The great folks at RVNG Int’l. are releasing this insanely-killer double vinyl compilation of new mixes and unreleased material from the ’70s Italian psychedelic prog-rock renegades, Sensations’ Fix, who were led by guitarist, keyboardist, singer, composer Franco Falsini. And we have a copy for one of you!

Music Is Painting In the Air is a collection of new mixes and unheard music from Sensations’ Fix’s prolific output between 1974 and 1977. Revered as one of the great articulations of progressive music, Music Is Painting In the Air offers guide posts to those familiar with Sensations’ Fix’s amorphous catalog and an approachable primer to those just journeying on the sensational trip.”

“Falsini blazed a trail for home recording that has impressed upon inward resourcing and reflecting musicians and DIY enthusiasts in the decades since. A technology stalwart, Falsini employed a floor model MiniMoog and a tricked-out Teac 4-track machine to transform the Virginia basement of his house into a cosmic conduit and launch pad for Sensations’ Fix.”

Coming Soon: Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s new LP, Psychedelic Pill

I’m fucking psyched about the new Neil Young & Crazy Horse joint, Psychedelic Pill, coming out on October 30th. Shit, the first track is 27.5 minutes long!

Following up this year’s single Americana release, Psychedelic Pill looks like it will dig in much further, with 8 songs spread over two CDs. And it will also be available on triple-vinyl. The sour news though is that the vinyl will cost you about $88.

Now, I initially thought that this was due to Warner Brothers price-gauging, knowing that they could count on a certain number of sales from both Neil-fetishists and vinyl-fetishists. But Jeff Conklin from East Village Radio tells me that it’s because Neil insists that the records be cut and mastered at a specific plant in Japan and the stock for the sleeve is from somewhere in Europe. All boosting the costs. I still call some major label shenanigans in there!
