TVD Recommends: Making Time with Little Boots and Beach Fossils at Voyeur, 5/4

Philadelphia’s biggest indie dance party, Making Time returns this month, bringing English dancepop star Little Boots and Brooklyn indie rockers Beach Fossils together at Voyeur on Cinco de Mayo eve.

It’s going to be a big day for England’s Victoria Hesketh, aka Little Boots. For starters, she stops in Philadelphia at the midway point in her short, six date US tour. It’s also the weekend before her new album, Nocturnes, is released. On top of all of this, it’s her birthday! Any one of the aforementioned would be reason to get down in the city of brotherly love, but combine all three in a hot, sweaty nightclub whose doors stay open past curfew, and you’ve got one night not to be missed.

Joining Little Boots for the night are Brooklyn four-piece Beach Fossils, fronted by founder Dustin Pasyeur. Like Little Boots, Beach Fossils are also celebrating their sophomore release, now a few months old. Mysterious Italian DJ duo, Tiger & Woods round out the bill of non-resident artists performing.

For the past few years, Little Boots has been working on the follow-up to her 2009 debut Hands and the subsequent “Illustrations” EP. For Nocturnes she teamed up with DFA Records cofounder Tim Goldsworthy. James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco and Andy Butler of Hercules and the Love Affair make appearances on the new album as well. The record is a mix of ’70s disco and ’90s house music, brimming with Hesketh’s remarkable knack for writing catchy, hook-filled pop.

Beach Fossils made news earlier this year with the release of their latest album Clash the Truth via Captured Tracks. What was once the bedroom project of Dustin Pasayeur has gone through a great deal of change and development, most notably is the revolving door of band members who include Zachary Cole Smith (now with his own band, DIIV) and John Pena (now with Heavenly Beat). Nonetheless, the sound and direction of the band has matured, evolving from a dream-pop toward elements of ’80s post-punk.

As with every Making Time party, Dave P. and company will be on hand filling the gaps between Little Boots, Beach Fossils, and Tiger & Woods, and Cinco de Mayo drink specials will be flowing throughout the night. Dave himself also promises to spend way too much at Party City on decorations.

Making Time will take place at Voyeur at 1221 St. James Street in between Walnut Street and Locust Streets. Tickets will be available at the door or can be purchased online for $15.
